My dog Leia is in the hospital. I’ve had her for 12 years and it’s been really hard this week.

She had surgery on Friday for mass removal & after doing better for a couple of days, she started to decline. She’s been hospitalized and is undergoing treatment. She’s currently stable but because of post-op complications, she may need additional surgery & aggressive treatment.

*update*: THE VETS SAID SHE CAN BE SWITCHED TO OUTPATIENT CARE TODAY!!!

 

As anyone that’s ever met me knows, Lou is my world. She is family and has been in my life from university to international moves to camping trips, hikes, doctors appointments & bbqs. I will do everything in my power to make sure she is comfortable.

 

Medical details: Following mass removal surgery + a partial mastectomy on Friday, Leia developed an infection (possibly from the procedure) that caused abscesses (pus pockets) in the wound. Because it was internal, it affected her kidneys & caused severe anemia. She’s been on antibiotics and fluids, has received a blood transfusion and is undergoing open wound care. A dip in her BP meant that her care plan was changed and the wound was reopened without anesthesia. She has been weaned off the BP meds & stable overnight but is still hooked up to a catheter for lidocaine (for an arrhythmia), nutrients in her nose, an antimicrobial and and open wound bandage. Her kidneys and anemia have improved since hospitalization and she tolerated the blood transfusion + abscess drainage well. She’s not out of the woods yet, but she is fighting.
- updates: Leia was send home for a couple of nights & doing well. She went in for daily bandage changes & yesterday the doctor okayed todays surgery to put in a drain for the abscesses and re suture. 

 

Costs: Initial surgery was about 3k, with pre- care at around 2k. Current emergency hospitalization has cost over $10,000 for 2 days. They are requesting $4,310 for the next 24-48 hours, not including possible additional + wound close up. + ~ $3700 for resealing surgery
