My name is Laura Lopez and this is my story. I am a 33 year old mother of 2 beautiful girls, Mariah 12, and Alina 5, and a wife to Luis for almost 13 years. I've been blessed with a beautiful family and good health, until just recently.
Several months ago I started with some ailments that I chucked up to "getting old", afterall I was just months away from turning 33. I was fatigued, nauseous, and had "tummy aches" and discomfort in the abdomen. Those tummy aches and discomfort eventually turned into contant discomfort and sharp pains that would double me over in pain. I didn't understand what was going on. Fortunately, working in the healthcare field, I have some pretty smart and amazing friends. I asked one of my best friends, who just happens to be a Physician's Assistant, to take a look at my abdomen and see if she could shed some light on the situation. After feeling around on my abdomen she immediately ordered some blood work as well as an abdominal untrasound. There was one problem, I didn't have health insurance to help cover the cost of any of the test that were ordered. But I did it anyway, I had the tests done. Two days later the results were in; I had an enlarged liver with several nodules on the liver and my lab results showed my liver numbers were elevated. From there I was immediately sent to the emergency room where I was admitted and spent the next 4 days, including Christmas Eve and part of Christmas Day. While in the hospital I underwent a CT of the abdomen, a CT of the chest, a CT guided biopsy of my liver, and countless more blood tests, as the doctors in the hospital were testing for malignancy.
All this without insurance! I know it's only a matter of time before the bills from the hospital, doctors and labs start coming in.
Since being discharged from the hospital I have signed up for health insurance, which became effective on 1-1-16. I have an upcoming appointment to get my results from all the tests that were done in the hospital. I will also have to follow up with an Oncologist for more tests and for a treatment plan.
Your donations, no matter how small, would help our family tremendously during this tought time. We are also asking for your prayers and good thoughts as we prepare for what lies ahead.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you in advance for all your love and support!
