Why this Fund
The first Pride was a riot. A riot started by transgender women of color. In the same spirit of rebellion, we want to make sure that during Pride month we see bold actions from LGBTQIA+ serving organizations in Milwaukee and LGBTQIA+ allies. Those organizations, donors and allies that would pump thousands of dollars into the 3-day weekend of PrideFest at the Summerfest Grounds, should ensure the health and wellness of Milwaukee queer and trans youth of color NOW!
The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the particular vulnerability of QUEER & TRANS YOUTH OF COLOR. Due to our community disproportionately experiencing a lifelong arc of violence and discrimination, many of our community members are impoverished and housing unstable.
Many folks in our community are self-employed or in the service economy, and living with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and/or compromised immune systems.
Seeing that the COVID-19 pandemic in Milwaukee has exposed the lack of support to our queer and trans youth of color, we have taken it upon ourselves to set up a fund for our communities, inspired by Amita Swadhin’s QTIBIPOC COVID-19 Mutual Aid Fund.
Who’s Behind the Fund?
Jeanette Martín and alida cardós whaley, two brown queers raised at minowakiing, so-called "milwaukee" on the south and north sides respectively. We cofounded STITCH MKE back in Summer 2009 as two artists in our late teens seeking to carve necessary space, amplify the voices of young BIPoC artists in our city, and stitch together our Black and Brown communities in an intentional and culturally-informed way.
We are reactivating STITCH to once again support and provide some relief to our beautiful and resilient queer and trans youth of color in Milwaukee!️
