Hi, my name is Donald Rack. If you're reading this then you probably don't need an introduction.
If you don't know who I am allow me to introduce myself. I live in Rochester, MN. I am 30 years old.
I'm also a mutant.
Instead of having an Adamantium skeleton and awesome facial hair, one of my genes that affects an important protein is rather corrupted.
The protein dystrophin, which keeps muscle tissue all muscly. I have duchenne muscular dystrophy. Average life expectancy is 25. Guess I didn't get the memo.
Since the fall of 2002 I have spent most my time in my room, stuck in bed. A ventilator as a ball and chain for my high tech prison cell. I maybe leave my room once every couple of months.
Before 2010 I left once a year.
But it ain't all bad!
Instead of living in a misery factory that is a nursing home I was fortunate enough to end up at the Ferguson House. Part of Hiawatha Homes, an organization that consists of 20 group homes.
It's an actual home with my own room. I live with four other people and a dimwitted Shih Tzu. Some of the staff will be my friends for life.
Now that I got that business out of the way...
On to the whole point of this campaign!
I'm a very creative person. I've dabbled in many different kinds of art. Mostly failing at it but I always try. Writing. 3-d modeling, graphic design, video editing, machinima filmmaking, and music production.
I've been able to do all of these pretty inexpensively. There is just one art form I've never been able to do and I have always wanted to.
Photography.
Just one little problem. No money.
Photography is a notoriously expensive hobby. Most people start off small and progress from there. I can't even afford to start.
I get $1,226 in Social Security a month. Minus the cost of taking care of me I'm left with $70, sometimes a lot less.
Just to afford a decent DSLR camera I would have to save for about 5 months. Without spending anything. To afford a camera and all the accessories to really make a go at it will take over a year.
If I want to be able to move the camera and operate the camera remotely I'm looking at saving up for almost 2 years.
Not to be a bummer but I don't know if I have 2 years.
But I don't plan on going anywhere anytime soon!
After a couple months of research and doing the the math I estimate for $1,000 I can buy a DSLR and the needed accessories.
For $2,000 I will be able to shoot outdoors and have more control of the camera.
If by some miracle I receive more than that, I don't know. Who knows what I'll be able to accomplish in photography?
So if you know me or if I'm a total stranger. If we were best friends or if I was The Joker to your Batman. I ask you to help me with my little dream and next phase of my life. Donate, share, and like if you can. Let's do this!
