My dear sister in law Dayna Kaplan was stricken with an extremely rare form of pneumonia that almost took her life. After being sick for 2+ weeks at home, she landed in the emergency room, told she had pneumonia and was sent home with antibiotics. Dayna continued to get worse and at a doctor’s follow up visit 4 days later was instructed to get to the hospital immediately. A few of days of antibiotics and oxygen did nothing, and she continued to decline. Doctors were at a loss as to what she had and what to do for her. She was then moved to ICU due to her not responding to treatment and for more intrusive testing, including being put on a ventilator for 3 days. An infectious disease doctor and pulmonary specialist were called in, who diagnosed her with Eosinophilic pneumonia, something they see only a few times a year.
Dayna remained in ICU for a total of 9 days, and in the hospital for 12. She is now continuing to heal at home which will be another 4 – 6 weeks.
This has not only taken a toll physically and emotionally on both her and Terry, but also financially. They are looking at a very large hospital bill even after insurance coverage. This is the type of detour in life that can’t be planned for. I know that many of you have been wanting to help in some way and this is the most tangible way to help ease their burden of the past several weeks and weeks to come.
Those who know Dayna know that she is one of the most caring, giving and unselfish people you will ever meet. She drops everything to help someone in need. Now it is our opportunity help her.
