Mixed media long term art project + Funds for my family in Esteli during COVID19
In 2015, I went to Esteli to see my family, and began building my portfolio to apply to the Fashion Institute of Technology. Since then, the political situation has made it difficult to arrange for travel safely to my family's city. I canceled twice, and I remember many nights when I felt frustrated that I couldn't be with my family. I have lost members of my family whom I photographed just 5 years ago - my grandmother, three aunts, a young cousin. I feel that it is passed time to go home.
I have since graduated from university, and was able to secure a trip to Nicaragua for just under a month for this December/January. I am continuing to be in communication with more family, and want to collaborate with them to do more social and environmental documentary work across several mediums. The first part of my budget is going towards the equipment I want to bring down, and I've provided a breakdown of other financial factors. There is no guarantee that I will be able to come back in the near future, and I want to get as much footage of my family and the countryside as I can.
Nicaragua's health care system does not have the infrastructure or support to handle the high numbers in cases they are experiencing; medical care can be out of reach for family members who can't afford it or have no access/transportation to a hospital with resources. It would make a tremendous difference to have resources to support my cousins should they need to pay for COVID19 tests to return to work, need gas money, groceries, or other support that I would be able to offer while I am fully available to them. This is the second part of the budget, and would mean everything to us.
I already have my flights purchased, and I'll be staying at my grandma's house to cut costs for lodging. I am super blessed to have been lent a Sony A7S with a lens for the entirety of the trip, and have all the basics of travel - my budget only includes things I need financial support with. I'm making this effort to get out of my comfort zone, and try to fund my dream work. Any small amount will make the difference for both me and my close fam, and I appreciate anything and everything. If there is something outside of financial support you can offer, I'm all ears.
I am so grateful to everyone who is here reading this - your support means everything to me. There were many missed birthdays, funerals, and memories because of situations outside of my control. I want to go down prepared to best help myself and others, and make the most of my time with my family. I will slowly be building up more mixed works on my website and instagram, so be sure to follow the process!
