As some of you may already know, many years ago at age 10 Mitzi faced a fierce battle with cancer. She received large doses of chemotherapy drugs for an extended period of time. I clearly remember when she first came to Awtrey Middle School. Her large eyes timid but curious and peering from under her dark wig. I could see then she had a story to tell. Courageous as she has always been, she quickly drop kicked the wig and faced the world with pride as she healed and transformed back into her happy, lovely, funny self.
Years later the long term effects of the chemotherapy that saved her life are now taking a toll on her heart.  About a year ago she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure as well as kidney cancer. Once again she overcame the cancer but has continuously dealt with heart issues. On the 17th of this month, she will be admitted to Emory Hospital for open heart surgery that will take place on the 21st. She will be having her Tricuspid and Mitral valves replaced.
Since her heart is currently working at 25% capacity, Mitzi is now on medical leave from the University of West Georgia. Her children and her students have been her utmost responsibility and pride. She is eager to take care of her medical needs, get strong and get back to business.
As we all know, deductibles, copays, medications and out of pocket medical expenses are high and have vastly accumulated. Mitzi is a very private and prideful person who would never dare ask for financial help, thus I am asking for her. Please keep Mitzi and her family in your prayers during this intense time.
