Mitch’s Battle With Aplastic Anemia & GVHD

Donation protected
In October 2025, Mitch was diagnosed with the rare and life-threatening blood disorder Aplastic Anemia, a condition where the body stops producing enough healthy blood cells. Since receiving this devastating diagnosis, Mitch has undergone intensive chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant in January 2026 at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney in the hope of giving him the best chance at recovery.

While the transplant was successful initially, Mitch’s recovery has been far from straightforward. In the first week after being discharged, Mitch showed symptoms of Graft Vs Host Disease (GVHD) in his gut. Since then, he has spent significant time in and out of hospital battling this disease - a severe condition where the transplanted cells attack his old cells and organs. This has left Mitch unable to properly eat, absorb nutrients, or retain fluids, dramatically impacting his strength, health, and quality of life. At this stage, doctors are still trying to find a treatment that works, and the road ahead remains incredibly uncertain.
While facing these overwhelming medical challenges, Mitch and his wife are also caring for their newborn twins, who arrived around the same time he became critically unwell, as well as their 4-year-old son. Between ongoing hospital stays, treatment costs, accommodation in Sydney, travel, medications, ambulance fees and time away from work, the emotional and financial strain on the family has been immense.
We are raising funds to help ease some of the financial pressure during this incredibly difficult time, allowing Mitch and his family to focus on what matters most which is his treatment, recovery, and spending precious time together as a family. Any support, big or small, would mean the world to them, and we are deeply grateful for your kindness, generosity, and support.
