Mitch Giampaoli's Liver Transplant
Donation protected
Mitch Giampaoli is a 45 year-old graduate of California State University Chico, father of two young boys, and a San Mateo Deputy Sheriff and Correctional Officer.
February 2015, Mitch was officially diagnosed with Hepato Pulmonary Syndrome or HPS and is in need of a Liver Transplant and is officially with the National Organ Donor Registry.
HPS causes the liver to interfere with the lungs ability to pass oxygen to the blood. Only cure is a liver transplant.
One of the things required before a liver transplant can be performed, is to have a support team in place which he has done so already.
After the transplant is performed, he will need 24-hour coverage for the next 6-8 weeks once he leaves the hospital.
Members of the team will be with him in case of any medical complications, to drive him to 3 appointments per week, and to make sure he is taking his medications-14 pills four times a day is the average, etc..
MEDICAL BACKGROUND
Mitch’s blood type is O+, which is quite common.
He will have to wait 12-18 months for a deceased donor liver transplant.
The longer he waits for a deceased liver donor, the sicker he will become.
Therefore, he is trying to go the live donor route.
A live donor transplant is one where the donor gives him a piece of his liver and it will grow back to 95% of its original size within the first month for both him and the donor.
The donor is usually able to return to normal duties in 2-3 months while I am out for 6-12 months depending on complications.
A brother of his recently failed to qualify for the live donation due to an irregular sized liver. He has a few more relatives to find a possible qualified donor.
WHY DO WE NEED YOUR HELP?
The main reason for this website is that his insurance doesn’t cover costs associated with his support team, nor does it cover the live donor’s lost wages, a support team for the donor (i.e. income if any, childcare issues, etc) and other donor needs.
Please band together to help this officer in need!
