Help Mitchell Carter Recover
My name is David Knowles. I am Michell's friend, pastor, and former teacher. Mitchell just graduated from Pender High School on June 8, 2019. Unfortunately, Mitchell, along with his friend Jason, were in an accident on June 29 that almost took their lives. Both were thrown from the vehicle, and received multiple injuries, Jason more throughout his body, Mitchell with brain injuries.
Both Mitchell and Jason were placed in ICU at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, and thus began their medical treatment. Jason has made progress and will be going home in the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately, Mitchell has not been so fortunate. He has yet to regain consciousness, as we would call it, even though doctors agree that progress has been made. One doctor stated that he never thought Mitchell would make the progress he has. The medical team at NHRMC has done all they can do. Now comes the next step.
Mitchell has the opportunity to receive medical treatment and rehab at the Shepherd Center, located in Atlanta, Georgia. It is a "private, not-for-profit hospital specializing in medical treatment, research, and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord injury, brain injury and stroke. U.S. News & World Report ranks Shepherd Center among the top 10 rehabilitation hospitals in the nation.
Here's where we all come in. The cost of transporting Mitchell to and from the Shepherd Center is $12,000.00. Insurance will not pay for transportation, but the family has been able to find some support to offset this financial strain. However, they do not have enough to cover the cost entirely. The family needs an additional $5800.00. This will cover the first stage of what we hope to be Mitchell's full recovery. When he returns from Atlanta, there will be other costs that I'm sure the family will need help with. So, when you see the funds accumulating, and they are close to our initial goal, please don't refrain from giving. Continue to give, as you would want everyone to give in honor of your loved one.
In addition to this GoFundMe account, we are also planning a local fundraiser here in Willard, N.C. Be on the lookout on FB for more details for that event.
If you would like more details on the Shepherd Center, you will find that at these sites:

I will update this page as often as there is news to update.
Thank You for your love and concern.
