On Friday May 10, 2017 my sister's husband smashed her laptop and punched her in the chest, sall in front of her teenage son. He kicked her out of her home, stole all the money from her account, and changed all of the passwords to her accounts. He continued to verbally abuse her via text message, and alternated those hateful messages with apologies and platitudes. She helped him move into an apartment nearby and she moved home, and they planned to seek counseling and work on their marriage.
On Friday May 26, 2017 things escalated and he threatened to commit suicide and was verbally aggressive on the phone. My sister called a crisis hotline to seek help for him, but they couldn't force him to talk to him. She became uncomfortable and asked a friend to call 911, and sent her kids to a family member's home. As soon as they left her husband came into the house and began to beat her. She had both phones in her hands when he came in and he smashed those first. He then beat her and she lost consciousness multiple times. At some point she came to and saw him in the kitchen drawer getting matches. At that moment she ran outside and flagged down a passing car. As they drove off he was reentering the home with a gas can. He proceeded to set fires in the living room and dining room and then fled. He wasn't brought into police custody until the following afternoon.
Fire fighters were able to put out the fire before it spread beyond those two rooms, but kids' rooms upstairs had a lot of smoke damage. Insurance will pay to repair the home, but Misty then needs to sell it so she can move closer to her job and away from the place where she was terrorized. Homes are not selling in her area and it is likely it will be on the market for months if not years.
I'm starting this Go Fund Me page her and her 3 children - Xaiver (soon to be 16), Journey (9), and Maisey (8). My goal is to help her pay off her home after insurance repairs it so that she can have the freedom to move while she waits to sell it. She also needs money for legal fees so that she can keep her protection from abuse order in place and divorce her husband.
If you'd like to help in other ways her girls lost most of their clothing in the fire, and all of their books and toys except a few prized stuffed animals that smell like smoke and chemicals despite a thorough washing. They could use bikes and helmets. All of their food is gone except a few things that survived in the fridge. They will need new mattresses.
Most of all they need love, support, and security. Misty needs a lot of building up as years of abuse have stripped her of her self worth and left her feeling unwarranted guilt and sympathy. Thank you for taking the time to read her story and for any support you can give.
