USMC veteran Patrick Quinn and his family will be the beneficiaries of this fundraiser.
What has happened to our family, should never happen to anyone! It is our desire to not only raise awareness to the atrocities committed by employers, but the immorality running rampant in our society today.
Our family was living in Pennsylvania when it came to our attention that we were needed in our beloved Missouri, as patrick’s parents are in their 80s and have begun to transition their living situation to a multi stage retirement community.
My husband answered a job listing online for an equine farm located in Mansfield, Missouri that was looking for a farm mechanic. After an over the phone interview, everything seemed to be exactly what we were looking for. Please note that due to age when you hit 55 and older Weibels wobble, but they don’t fall down and it does take a little bit longer to get up from and down on the floor. Those of you in our age group can appreciate that. My husband accepted the job and we relocated.
We arrived on the farm in Mansfield June 25 to find the home included for us to live in was filthy dirty, infested with fleas and unsafe. When I say unsafe, I’m talking about hot wires, sticking out of the light switch to turn on and off the light in the master bedroom, plus others. We told the owner that if he would pay for the supplies, we would gladly repair all of the safety issues and spray the house and foundation to get rid of the flea infestation. He refused. However, the owner gladly excepted my offer to allow me to paint the house providing I pay for all the paint and supplies.
Well, we can’t live in a flea infested house, it’s just plain icky. So off to Walmart we go we purchase flea spray, Flea and tick fogger and cleaning supplies. We returned to the house spray everything, set off the foggers and relocate for the night. We return in the morning to air the house out, wash walls, disinfect absolutely everything, start making repairs on the safety issues, and unload the U-Haul.
June 27, 2024. My husband began working. The first thing he ask is to fill out the normal on boarding paperwork such as the W-4 and proof that you’re US citizen, things like that. He was denied. Patrick continued to ask daily to fill out the paperwork to no avail.
The pay period of June 15 through June 30 is paid on July 1. The pay period of July 1 through July 15 is paid on July 15. The verbal agreement we had before leaving Pennsylvania was $2500 per month salary. A month is from the first to the last day of each month therefore since pay dates are the first and the 15th that means we should be paid $1250 on the 1st and the 15th.
So July 1 comes and there is no paycheck. We really expected to hear the owner say, you know you only worked one week out of the month I think it’s only right that I ask you if it’d be OK we pay you for one week? Which to us would be fair and acceptable and agreed to. We begin to think well maybe they need a little extra time to process the paperwork to get the check to us. On July 5 my husband called the owner and says hey, when am I gonna get paid? The owner says oh that’s right we still need you to fill out paperwork so arrangements are made for my husband to go and fill out the paperwork and pick up his paycheck. Patrick arrives at the house and instead of receiving his paycheck. He’s given the forms first to fill out. The forms are not the normal on boarding forms. They hand Patrick an independent contractor agreement. We have never been independent contractors. We did not answer a solicitation for an independent contractor and an independent contractor position was never mentioned nor discussed.
Patrick brings home the agreement. We read through it and find it very contradicting to itself and to the verbal contract agreed-upon. We decide that it is in our best interest not to sign the contract as we are not legally or financially capable at this time to sign it. Patrick asks the owner if there can be modifications made with negotiations on the independent contractor agreement that would allow us to sign it. The owner absolutely refused.
Now Patrick has worked two weeks without proper onboarding and has to and does inform the owner that he will not sign the contract. Patrick lets the owner know that as soon as he is paid he will resign and vacate the premises immediately.
While employed for the two weeks, Patrick took one half day off in order to go to the VA to work on his rating. Patrick is now informed by the owner that “ had I known you were disabled I would have never hired you”.
Please be mindful that Patrick did not ask for any modifications due to the fact that at this time he does not need them. As I said before weibels wobble, but they don’t fall down.
While I update the story and add the details, here are bullet points as to updates that will be expanded upon.
As we consider options to keep the public informed, this will be updated, and there may be a Facebook page dedicated within the next few days.

While I update the story and add the details, here are bullet points as to updates that will be expanded upon.
- They’ve tried to be slick and slip in independent contractor tax items for Patrick to sign without his knowledge of what they are.
- They are now saying that we are tenants to which they have process, served him by way of the owner mother, to act as a lease agreement without any dollar amount for rent or anything else other than garnishing his wages.
- Statements, such as we should have collected a deposit before you began employment for housing and will withhold your wages for damages. Statements that we will be responsible for utilities that were included in the original verbal contract and will be withholding wages for same.
July 9: They called the sheriff to do a welfare check on the children.
Jobseekers beware:
- Ask if employment is 1099 (independent contract) or W-4.
- Get working/living conditions or anything else discussed in writing. Drawing only from our past experiences, benefits meant insurance, such as health, vision, dental, or things like 401(k)s, tuition reimbursement and profit-sharing. It never occurred to us that benefits would include Workmen’s Compensation, unemployment insurance, taxes, Medicare/Medicaid, apparently those items are also elective benefits.
- Get everything you can recorded in one way or another. He said she said doesn’t cut it.
- CYA my friends CYA.
