Miss R's Autistic Support Classroom

Donation protected
Recently, I graduated from West Chester University with degrees in Early Grades and Special Education. A  week after graduation, I landed my first teaching job at John. H. Webster Elementary School in North Philadelphia.

Currently, I am the lead teacher in the K-2 Autistic Support classroom.  The symbol for Autism is a puzzle piece.  This is because each individual with autism is uniquic and requires specialized attention to be educated in a way that is best for them.  Autism Speaks describes autism to be "characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors...ASD can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances."Invidiuals with autism face many challenges but are also extraaordinary in their own way.

In my classroom, the students are all vastly different in their strengths and needs.  Their language abilites, sensory needs, academics, social and emotional needs, and home enviroments vary.  All of the money raised will be used to purchase supplies to assist students in their education and development. Examples of how the funds will be used include:
-purchasing sensory items (kinesthetic sand, playdough, brushes, putty etc.)
- community based instruction trips( transportation cost, tickets, materials etc. )
-materials to assist in attention and focus (wobble chairs, balance ball, trampaline, easel, noise canceling headphones)
-basic classroom supplies (glue sticks, lined paper, art supplies, picture cards, pencils, hand grips, adapted scissors)
-Pivotal Response materials(organization bins, life skills toys)

*Currently, I am trying to raise money to purchase the Edmark Reading Program.  I have access to bits and pieces of reading intervention programs. However, due to not having access to materials designed for students with autism, it is difficult to provide students with quality reading instruction. Edmark is desgined for students with learning disabilties as it offers many visual supports and is repetitive. It breaks down areas of reading so that students, regardless of their disabilties and where they come from, can be successful readers.  The program also includes a functional word series which will allow children learn concepts they need in order be safe in the community.*

I am extremely grateful for any donations for my classroom. I love each student as if they were my own child.  It is my goal to provide them with the best education possible and to have as many opportunties to support them in their growth and understanding as possible.
