Dear friends,
As I enter my third year of teaching in Washington Heights, New York City, I am brimming with ideas and excitement for the adventure to come. I am thrilled to meet my new sixth grade students, to write short stories and poems with them, to teach them how to craft an argument, and to read RJ Palacio's "Wonder" and other novels.
As the year approaches, I also find myself asking the question that always creeps into the back of my mind: How will I provide all of the things my students need to reach their goals? Working within a school system that does not accommodate basic student needs like books, paper, and pencils has its challenges. This is why I am reaching out to you for help: even the smallest contribution will allow my sixth grade students to learn and grow.
Below, I have provided a list of some of the things I have noticed a need for in my classroom. Any monetary or material donations will help my students have a successful year! Here are just some of the projects you can make happen:
- Class sets of books used during novel studies
- Individual books for avid readers who do not have access to appropriate reading materials
- Classroom materials including but not limited to: pencils, loose leaf paper, construction paper, 1-2 inch binders, erasers, paper clips, glue sticks, staples, etc.
- Student of the Week prizes
- Goodies for whole-class rewards
- Granola bars, fruits and veggies, and sandwiches for kids who need meals
- Educational field trips
- Materials for extracurricular activities (sheet music for chorus, gardening supplies for gardening club)
Anything you can give is SO appreciated, and each little bit will help my students reach their fullest potential this year! Thank you for your generosity!
