Howdy!
Let me fill you in...
In June of 2016 I was 23 years old and weighed 514 pounds. Less than a quarter of a century in age, but I weighed over a quarter of a ton. The combination of needing to use an industrial scale and realizing my students were suffering sparked the beginning of an incredible journey.
I set forth to change my health to be the best teacher I could possibly be. As a one person agriculture department, my students depended on me to get them to trips and sustain through the day. My students weren't getting what they deserved, and that was only because I couldn't do it.
Two years later, life looks a bit different these days. Actually, a lot different. My life has made a complete 180 change. I am no longer a hermit in my parents' house. My mental fog has been lifted. I can actually fit behind the wheel of a car. I am 1/3 of my former weight. Oh, and next June I get a new last name!
I have freed myself from my own mental and physical prisons, only to create a new one. My excess skin. I knew that I would face loose skin, but I was not prepared for what I now battle.
My newly small frame is not built to handle the pounds and pounds of skin hanging from my body. It causes constant neck and back pain, as well as becomes irritated and infected under the skin folds. I am also limited in physical activities. The weight of the skin itself is limiting, as is the care needed to maintain it.
Being young and properly hydrated, my body has responded to this dramatic of a weight loss as well as it possibly can. At this point, there is no diet and exercise that will lessen the amount of skin. My only option is to have it surgically removed.
The proceeds of this campaign will be used to fund a Corset Body Lift or Lower 360 body Lift as well as a Thigh Lift. While my arms and chest have excess skin as well, my main priority are those areas causing pain.
I have attempted claims for insurance coverage, but have been denied. As a teacher that is also planning a wedding (one I never thought I'd live to see) funding is not available. *Edit: after a denied claim and appeal, a peer-to-peer review was accepted! The new total being asked for this campaign reflects the partial insurance coverage*
While it is my dream to have the surgery before my wedding in June, the main reason for expediting the timeline of these procedures is my health. I face pain daily, but the weight of the skin also causes skin degradation as time goes on.
My hope is that in this process, I can continue to live my life out loud in efforts to help educate those facing similar issues.
