Mission 4 Michy
Donation protected
There is nothing Michy does that does not include an additional mission to inspire others and tackling her cancer is no different. Michy was diagnosed with an uncommon breast cancer this past May. Since then, she has undergone multiple surgeries, completed a 12 week 4 rounds of intensive chemotherapy and will soon embark on continued radiation throughout the fall and early winter. Michy is also looking to participate in a six month vaccine trial through Mass General Hospital in order to continue to bring down her recurrence rate.
Most of you who know Michy already know that cancer has chosen the wrong woman. Michy Lemay has spent the past two decades dedicating herself to ensuring young athletes and adventurers at Mount Mansfield Ski Club and Academy, Rugged Adventures and beyond to find independence, inspiration, resilience and happiness in sports and life. If commitment to community could be measured by the number of planned scavenger hunts on the snowy trails of Mansfield or the number of times young skiers are encouraged to cheer on their teammates from the bottom of the hill, Michy would be in a class of her own. Her gentle ways of imparting empowering messages around the importance of keeping things in perspective, being grateful and mindful and approaching situations from a place of compassion are palpable.
Over the years, many of us have been on the receiving end of Michy’s love, positive mindset and inspiration and our hope is to not only support her in her own healing but, in true Michy fashion, consider how her journey can inspire others. Below is a small window into how her idea came to life.
While getting dressed one day between surgeries, Michy was practicing a mindful moment. This typically includes several deep breaths and repeated positive mantras spoken out loud. “You got this Lemay. No problem!!” (Can’t you all hear her saying this?!) As she slid on her socks she looked down and saw the Darn Tough logo and exclaimed “Heck Ya Lemay. You are Darn Tough! You Got this!” That mantra stayed with her all day and created a light bulb moment for her ~ “Imagine if we could create a “Michy sock” to help inspire others who are going through any tough moment?”
The impact of her story has inspired the introduction of a limited run of “The Michy Sock” thanks to Darn Tough Vermont. This sock combines all things Lemay in one awesome design on Mt. Mansfield’s trails, hikers, bikers and skiers all wrapped in a little bit of camo and a message for anyone going through a tough time~ “I am Darn Tough.” Michy wants every person who wears this sock to be reminded it’s how we react to the curveballs life throws our way that will make all the difference and every person who wears this sock is strong and powerful in their own way. #iamdarntough, #youaredarntough, #wearedarntough.
Thank you all for your support over the last few months and moving forward. No one ever wants to find themselves on a Go Fund Me page and Michy and her family are no exception. We are lucky to have an incredibly compassionate community that knows how to rally and a Go Fund Me seemed like the best place to reach everyone who wishes to support Michy in whatever way feels easiest and most accessible to you.
Michy and her family are beyond grateful for the love and support they have received from this community and beyond. The funds raised will be invaluable in helping to offset her medical expenses. Imagine all of the good Michy will do as this journey, combined with her inherent desire to create positivity, leads to her supporting others who are experiencing life challenges and instilling the belief that they are "Darn Tough".
