I am raising funds during my birthday month for a trip to Sao Vicente, Cabo Verde with the non-profit No Backpack Day. This incredible Charlotte-based organization will bring 1,000 backpacks and school supplies to the island, a year after the tragic flood that caused massive destruction and loss of life. Sao Vicente is my home, and I have been volunteering with No Backpack Day for over 10 years. In 2017, I brought students on a study abroad trip to Cabo Verde, and together we delivered 250 backpacks collected by No Backpack Day, along with other supplies, to children in need. This experience showed me firsthand the power of community and the difference we can make when we come together.

This year, I want to join the trip in person and travel alongside Mongai Fankam, the founder of No Backpack Day. Mongai started the organization when she was just 8 years old, and since then, she has become like a sobrinha (niece) to me. Her dedication and vision have inspired thousands, and it’s an honor to join her in delivering hope and resources to children who need it most. The funds I raise will be used to cover my travel expenses so I can join the mission, help distribute supplies directly to the children, participate in cultural programs with them, and work alongside local reputable organizations to ensure the backpacks reach those who need them most. No Backpack Day has helped Cabo Verde in the past, and I truly believe in their mission. They have donated over 100,000 backpacks and supplies to children all over the US and the world. It’s an honor to travel with Mongai to my island nation and support the ongoing rebuilding efforts after the flood.
