Keep Mission Praxis Thriving

Donazione protetta
Hi!
My name is Mary, you might know me from the rainbow corner on 24th St and Treat Avenue in the Mission District, San Francisco. It is a little slice of heaven on earth, with plants for adoption, handmade clothing and goods, tunes floating from the outside speakers, and the sewing faeries working late into the night.

This month I need your help to keep the rent paid so we can continue our work. This gofundme is a new avenue to help, and always the best way to support is by pre-paying for services and merchandise from the shop.

Coming up on the winter and new year we have Jan/Feb, the two slowest months for retail, and in 2021 (specific date unknown) our building will undergo seismic retrofitting, giving me 6-8 months without access to our beautiful corner.  In this precious time I am hoping to get as much work done as possible in anticipation of the new adventure and coming back to a sparkly fresh shop.

Your support will help me as I work over the winter months to :

-pay rent, monthly bills, and taxes
-create more merchandise for the shop
-further develop our online store
-provide sewing classes to our community
-allow us to continue community art projects, such as memorial quilts
-transition the business from an LLC to a Non-Profit

I am also excited for new projects I will be able to begin starting in December:

-local art shows Dec. 4-6th on the block
-setting up a weaving loom to make handwoven goods
-one on one weaving classes
-creating hand dyed goods
-in house t-shirt printing with original art by local artists

In September my friend Ivonne, also a core member of Mission Praxis from the beginning, found a weaving loom for the shop. She has been in Colombia for the last 11 months working with weavers and making clothing, and is bringing her experience and energy to the shop for a few months.

More about the Mission Praxis :

A magical portal opened in 2011 by Ethan and Aerin with the dream of creating a business focused on sustainability, self care, and building a local economy outside of the traditional capitalist system. Our philosophy of sustainability is practiced by using the resources we already have - donated and found materials, up-cycling existing garments, and sharing knowledge, skills, and materials with others.

I have been creating at Mission Praxis since I came to the bay area in 2012 and have been a business partner with our co-founders, Ethan and Aerin, since 2014. After many years of blissful co-creation, Ethan and Aerin moved forward to new beginnings and I have been holding it down since late 2016.

Over the last 9 years the mission of Praxis has been to become a community resource for local art, building relationships with our neighbors, and integrating into the culture of the mission to reduce the influence of gentrification.

In 2014 Aerin and I were able to begin offering classes and custom sewing services on top of sewing magical designs for the racks. Anything became possible as we created original designs for burning man, performing artists, and other special events.

In 2020, our community lost reliable sources of income such as festivals, events, and gatherings, which were cancelled when storefront access became limited due to shelter-in-place and other COVID-19 restrictions. Over the last few years I have supported the rent and bills with side jobs and custom orders, often working 50-70 hours a week to keep the shop going.

The hustle leaves little time and energy to build up the handmade merchandise, offer free classes and sewing support to our community, allowing the shop to grow and adapt to our lives in the pandemic. While there are a few jobs and orders lined up to keep me busy, I am not able to pay December rent due to the timing of receiving payment and working hours to complete orders and run the business.

Praxis has been uplifted and supported over the years by an amazing community of artists, neighbors, clients, friends and family. As a business owner, the struggle to push through challenges, insecurities, and the never-ending work is real. I would not have made it this far without the love, honesty, forgiveness, and affirmations from my community.

Every day has been an adventure and the roots of the shop are continually deepened in radical love, personal growth, and surrendering to the magic of the universe. I cannot begin to express my gratitude for this experience and for your alls support.

I love you all dearly, I see each person in my life as a treasure, you open my mind and heart with every interaction. It is such an honor to use fabric and color to bring your dreams to life. I am continually humbled by the depth of love, romance, and soul in the Mission.

Thank you for taking me in and I'll see you on the block :)
