Growing and Giving out 1000's of Milkweed plants while Employing Local Youth
Mission Monarch, a project launched by SAMOFund in 2021, needs your help to reach even more households with free milkweed and impact even more young lives locally!
From April - July of 2022, Mission Monarch has given away nearly 10,000 Narrowleaf Milkweed plants and helped establish over 1,000 new native milkweed plots in Southern California while employing local youth and introducing them to the local parks and meaningful work. With your support, we can double the amount of free milkweed given away in 2023 to 20,000 plants a year (4,000 new plots in Southern California!) and provide even more youth employment opportunities locally. Donations will support the following youth-led goals for 2022/2023:
- The collection and cleaning of over 1 million Narrowleaf Milkweed seeds (Asclepias fascicularis)
- Help grow and distribute live milkweed plants and clean seed to over 3,000 Southern California households, provided to the public free of charge
- Engage with the public at local festivals, conferences and events to promote local milkweed and best practices for welcoming monarchs into local gardens
- Work with local schools and youth groups to provide age-appropriate lessons covering local monarch and milkweed populations
- Help identify and document new and known milkweed populations in the Santa Monica Mountains of all three local milkweed species (Asclepias eriocarpa, fascicularis & californica)
- Organize, promote and produce the annual Southern California Monarch & Milkweed Conference, provided to the public free of charge

If you cannot support our mission financially, please consider joining us at our nursery in Newbury Park for a volunteer work day, where you can help us grow milkweed and other local plants and even take a few home for yourself! Mission Monarch is a project developed and run by the Santa Monica Mountains Fund (SAMOFund). Santa Monica Mountains Fund works to protect and encourage appreciation and understanding of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The Fund achieves this by supporting the National Park Service's efforts in education, science, research, improved facilities, citizen engagement and philanthropy.
