PROVIDING HOME COMFORTS TO THE FAMILIES OF THE CHILDREN WARD.
Hi, I’m Sophie, Eleri-mai’s mam.
I always say that my life before Eleri was black and white, I was oblivious as to what happened behind the doors of a children’s ward - the pain and heartache that comes with each diagnosis or procedure you see your child go through and the absolute exhaustion this can have on your body both mentally and physically.
Eleri-Mai has been a regular visitor to ward 31 and 32 at PCH since she was a couple of days old.
I have spent days and sometimes weeks at Eleri’s bedside and this often meant I would survive off the vending machines for food, my phone for entertainment and a hospital chair as a bed. Or spending a fortune in the canteen on the rare occasion I did get away for a change of scenery.
Nearly four years down the line and the “Miss Mai’s Snacks and Supplies” idea was born.
I want to make the parents room on the ward a space where other parents can recuperate, rest and most importantly refuel because as parents/carers we carry on without a thought about ourselves as long as our children are getting the help they need. But it is so so important to look after ourselves in order to look after our children, a thing I still often forget myself until I burn out.
This venture is going to rely solely on donations, I’m hoping as a community we can pull together and get the room stocked regularly. Follow our page on Facebook to find out other ways you can get involved or to have regular updates.
Having a child admitted to hospital is often unexpected and can be very challenging, providing food to the parents/carers will help them recuperate during the difficult times they may sadly face with their child.
All money raised will be spent soley on foods that can be easily made, eaten and stocked in the family room or on other essentials such as toiletries, utensils etc.
I just want to thank everyone for all the support we have received so far and I can’t wait to continue to update you on this journey.
**This initiative is lead independently of Cwm Taf health board. The group has been set up and supported by friends & families of the community**
