"To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honors." - Tia Walker
I have dedicated myself to be my mom's caregiver for the last 2 years now, and would continue forever if need be.
July of 2019 is when my Mom's health took a slight turn, but she and I worked together with some incredible doctors and medical staff to get my mom back on her feet, literally. Mom had health issues that caused her to need 2 toes to be amputated. After the amputations, her body wasn't healing the wound area as a normal healthy person's body would, so we were referred to Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Treatment, which would be 8 weeks of 2 hour treatments per day. Mom graduated Hyperbarics around November of 2019. She felt better than ever, and even got to ring the bell upon completion, which will be something I will never forget. It was a joyous moment to celebrate Mom's dedication to getting better. Then, in January of 2020, mom was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) - Cancer.
Our worlds got turned upside down as the word Cancer is scary, not only for the patient, but also for the family. No one knows what Cancer treatments entail, unless you've been through it yourself or with a loved one. It's been a rollercoaster ride this past year to say the least, with too many hospital stays to count, a Pandemic, the loss of my job, battling just about every month with healthcare insurances all while trying to be a Mom myself to my son.
I bore the responsibility of everything so that I could help my Mom focus on getting better and not worry about anything else. There were as many good days as there were not so good days this past year, but we've come to a bend in the road. Unfortunately, Mom's health has declined tremendously over the past two months and we, as a family, have made the dreaded decision to move Mom to hospice. She has not been transferred to hospice just yet, but will be within the next few days. After that, we don't know how long she will be with us. We've begun to prepare for her departure and in doing so have realized we need help to make it happen. Donations will be used for Mom's end of life care and funeral.
As hard as it is to go through all of this, it's equally as hard to ask for help. If you were lucky enough to know my mom, Miss Irene, you knew how caring, patient, kind, and funny she is - remind you of anybody? (wink!) I know Mom would be just as incredibly thankful as we are to have amazing friends and family to help us through this difficult time. We would like to sincerely thank you all for the prayers and support this past year. Funeral arrangements will be shared as soon as they become available.
From the bottom of our hearts, Thank you.
