Support a family of 5 unhomed by tenement collapse
Donation protected
A dear friend of Rumpus Room, Miriam and her family (5 people, 2 budgies, one canary and a cockatiel) have recently become homeless due to the collapsed tenement in Pollokshields, so we’ve set up this fundraiser to offer some financial support in this time of crisis.
We are initially trying to raise 9k as an emergency fund to get them through the next short period of time before they are given information on when they can be allowed back in their home.
The family are currently staying with another family member in cramped conditions with no answer as to when they can get back into their own home and access any of their belongings. They are currently looking for new accommodation until they can get back into their home. Miriam and her family, along with all of the other residents in the building, were evacuated after midnight and given 10 minutes to take what they needed for the night and have not been allowed back in since.
In addition to this, Mariam's dad had a brain injury last year and is currently unable to work to support the family.
Miriam and her family have lived in this flat for almost 20 years, and have lived on Albert Drive since the 1980’s. In 2020, part of their tenement building caught fire. Because of long-standing disputes between insurance companies, the damage was never repaired, leaving the burned roof exposed to the elements for five years. Despite repeated safety concerns, no action was taken by the Glasgow City Council.
In July this year, the exposed section of the building finally collapsed. Miriam and her family were immediately evacuated and told they will not be able to access their home or belongings until the building is stabilised, a process that could take up to a year, but remains unclear. You can read more about it here in a recent article by Glasgow Living Rent in The Big Issue here
‘Glasgow council knew this building was dangerous for years. Its collapse left people homeless. Five years ago, the tenement building on the corner of Albert Drive and Kenmure Street in the Pollokshields area of Glasgow burnt down. The council declared it a dangerous building and its tenants were evacuated, but delays and costs meant it was still standing in July 2025 – until it collapsed and left neighbouring residents homeless.’ - Big Issue
They are now facing huge uncertainty, with their lives uprooted through no fault of their own. This fundraiser is a way for us to come together and help ease some of the immediate pressures they are facing, and to show solidarity and love at what must be such a difficult time.
Any support would be so very welcome to help our friends and neighbours out at this difficult time.
Thank you,
Angel, Nadia and all Miriam's friends and fans at Rumpus Room.
