Mirella Cometti Mammoliti is a wife, a mother of two beautiful young men, a daughter, an aunty and a beloved friend.
She is now almost 51 years old and has lived the majority of her life fighting the debilitating autoimmune disease called Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (along with another 3 autoimmune diseases).
Multiple Sclerosis is a neurological autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system. Her immune system is gradually destroying her own nervous system.
To put in it in simple terms, the damage caused by MS is much like the damage that can occur to the plastic coating around the wire of a phone charger. If there is a small hole or break in the coating, the wire doesn't carry the electricity effectively.
The same is true in MS. Her body is attacking, damaging and causing inflammation to the Myelin coating around her nerves. This prevents signals from her brain effectively travelling around her body.
For as long as she can remember she has suffered ill health and embarked on a journey of years filled with being misdiagnosed, ridiculed, confused, scared of the unknown, laughed at and even being labelled as ‘faking’.
Her battle had gone for twenty years after finally receiving a diagnosis. To find out what it truly was, was heartbreaking to say the least. From this point it was a matter of facing the unexpected and battling hard every day
This whole time has resulting in Mirella being hospitalised more times that can be counted.
She now needs your help! The costs of dealing with her illnesses are definitely taking its toll. Mirella desperately needs your help. She needs your help with medical equipment and dreams of attending a health retreat/wellness conference as well as purchasing a new mobility scooter as the one she has weighs almost 30kg which neither her or her carers are able to lift! This incident has just recently put her in hospital as she tried to help her carer lift her scooter into her car which resulted in a torn muscle requiring intensive rehabilitation treatment and is an example of the many things being thrown her way.
She most importantly dreams of undergoing the ground-breaking treatment Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in Panama. The cost varies between $33,000-$60,000, but we are aiming for $50,000
