Don protégé
July 25, 2016 started out as an ordinary day for the Myers family. John left in the morning for his job in Valley, NE while Jamie got Addilyn (7) & Peyton (6) ready for a fun day at the zoo with their cousins. In typical teenager fashion, Logan decided to stay home for the day to enjoy some sibling free time. Nothing out of the ordinary, just an everyday family doing everyday ordinary things. But shortly before noon their lives would forever change.
An explosion described by neighbors as feeling like an earthquake rocked their Benson neighborhood. The ground shook and that shacking was felt miles away. Windows were blown out of homes up to two blocks away. The epicenter of this explosion, thought to be caused by a gas leak, happened to be at he home of Jamie & John's nextdoor neighbor. That explosion caused the Myer's home to be seperated from its foundation and crumbled half of their home to ruins.
Logan (14) was home during the explosion and happened to be in the basement. He was momentarily buried in the ruble but was able to free himself and also dial 911. It's unimaginable to think about how scared he must have been. For a 14 year old to have the courage and presence of mind in this level of emergency to dial 911 and get himself to safety is amazing to say the least.
Logan emerged from the basement to see his home in shambles. Injured but overall ok, he was driven to the hospital to make sure he hadn't sustained any unknown injuries. The first responders at the scene told the Myers family that had Logan not been in the basement at the moment of the explosion his fate may have been very different. There was definitely a Guardian Angel looking over this sweet family.
In the blink of an eye the Myers family had found themselves in a situation where their home had been condemed and they were faced with the stress of literally rebuilding their lives. They are currently working with the Red Cross to get their immediate needs met and are waiting patiently for word from their homeowners insurance on the status of a claim. However, they have lost so many things that will not be covered and are simply irreplaceable.
This Go Fund Me page has been started in an effort to help the Myers family rebuild and to lift their spirits during a time of unthinkable turmoil and stress. The money raised will be used for the following:
-To help their children transition into school with clothes, school supplies, etc;
-To replace beloved toys and items lost in the damage;
-To assist with any temporary housing needs they may have;
-To assist with any medical expenses they have incurred during their ER visit for Logan;
-To just give the family a little peace of mind and respite from the terrifying reality they are facing going forward.
