Miracles 4 Melissa (M4M)
Donation protected
In 2010, at the age of 38 and shortly after the birth of her youngest son, Melissa Smith-Belcher, who is our sister, was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease). Melissa was a beloved teacher and state champion volleyball coach for 17 years. Unfortunately, ALS has robbed Melissa from being able to hold these positions any longer.
Since being diagnosed, Melissa has slowly progressed in her disease to the point of needing 24-hour care. Melissa is not able to walk on her own, feed herself, speak, or simply care for herself or her two young children. She also has to have a specialized handicap accessible van, feeding tube and supplies, wheelchair, multiple medical appointments, and speaking device to sustain a modest quality of life. The greatest expense to date is the cost of home health care, which insurance does not cover. Therefore, this is a daily out-of-pocket expense that is highly needed. This expense will continue to rise as the disease continues to progress.
Our ultimate goal for Melissa is for her to be able to remain at home with her children for as long as she can to enjoy watching her boys grow. With money raised, Melissa will be able to pay for the increasing home health care expense. We would like to reach our goal of raising $55,000 by February 2017. This amount would allow Melissa to remain in her home for approximately one year.
We are carryng out this fundraiser because we love our sister and her sons that much. Melissa's quality of life is declining, but being able to remain in her home is a top priority. Making the best of what she still has means so much to her and her children, who need their mother and those memories that will last forever.
Donations will be withdrawn by Melissa's sister, Denise Hetrick, who serves as the POA and will deposit directly into M4M.
We appreciate the time you have given to read Melissa's story. Any donation you can provide will be greatly appreciated by Melissa and her children. We sincerely thank you!!
