From Missy and Nick's family:
On Saturday, March 19th, Nick and Missy headed to the hospital filled with great excitement and aniticpation for the arrival of their baby boy. As Missy labored through the night, she suddenly began to feel that something was not right. Shortly after telling Nick she was having a hard time breathing, Missy suffered a seizure and cardiac arrest. The doctors and nurses responded quickly, performing an emergency C-Section while giving Missy life-saving CPR. Doctors believed Missy was suffering from a rare and often-fatal birth complication known as am amniotic fluid embolism or AFE.
Missy's condition continued to worsen and she began to hemorrhage, another complication from AFE. She was intubated, placed into a medically induced coma, and given countless amounts of blood products that were needed to save her life.
Their sweet baby boy was immediately sent to the NICU and stabalized. Nick, unable to see Missy, rushed to be with their son. Seeing him for the first time, Nick was overcome with love yet wrought with fear that his beloved Missy was fighting for her own life. What should have been one the greatest moments in their life- suddenly turned tragic.
By the grace of God, and with the incredible care of nearly a hundred hospital staff, Missy survived the evening and her body slowly began to work on its own. Nick waited to name thier son until Missy was able to help make that decision. Missy continues to recover and has endured additional complications. She has very little understanding of what transpired but each day she is getting stronger and gets to spend more time with her bundle of joy- McCoy Edward!
During this difficult time, Nick, a member of the sherriffs department and volunteer fireman, has taken time off to care for both Missy and McCoy and is unsure of what long-term complications both Missy and McCoy may have.
Many have asked how to help support this wonderful family. A fund has been established to help with the immediate medical costs and cover any additonal expenses which are sure to come.
The family wishes to thank the incredible team at Covenant Hospital, their family, friends, co-workers and the many strangers who have prayed and offered their help. Since Missy remains in the hospital we are asking for privacy as they recover. We will do our best to make a regular updates.
We thank you in advance for any support and prayers you can provide. Missy, who is being called "Missy the Miracle", and Nick will be able to see your comments once they are home and settled.
