Estoy completamente inmovilizada.

Sofi

A Miracle in Motion: My Recovery After a Serious Accident

On August 22, my life changed completely.
I had absolute independence, and in just one second, everything changed — I became 100% dependent.

I live in Baños de Agua Santa — that’s my home, my refuge. That day, after having lunch with some friends, a friend invited me to go for a motorcycle ride. I accepted, simply to enjoy an ordinary day… never imagining what was about to happen.

While we were riding down a main street, a driver ran a stop sign. There was no time to react. We crashed into a metal platform and hit the pavement hard.
When I tried to get up, I couldn’t — and in that moment, I knew it was serious. But I could have never imagined the medical reality I would face, or the journey that awaited me. I never imagined I’d be living what I’m living now.

I was taken to the public hospital in Baños, where I was only given sedatives. Hours later, I learned the extent of my injuries: “Multiple fractures in the lumbar spine, pelvis, and hip.”

I was then treated at Hospital Metropolitano in Quito, where I underwent a complex surgery.
Today, I know it was a miracle that I survived. The doctors have told me that I will make a full recovery, although the process will be long and challenging.

However, the impact also damaged my sciatic nerve, causing severe and often unbearable pain. I need strong, high-dose medication just to make the pain tolerable. Since the day of the accident, I haven’t had a single pain-free moment.

It has now been two months, and my body is slowly rebuilding itself, step by step — though the constant pain has made recovery difficult.

I am completely immobilized. My greatest wish is to heal, to walk again, to regain my independence, and to return home.

The cost of my recovery — hospitalization, surgery, 24/7 medical care, pain therapy, medication, physical therapy, and ongoing treatments — has become overwhelming.
My private insurance doesn’t cover most of the expenses, and the medical bills keep growing, since the pain persists and I must continue therapy to manage it.
I never imagined how painful, long, and costly this process would be.

That’s why today, with humility and hope, I turn to you.
Not from weakness, but from gratitude — with the conviction that asking for help is also an act of strength and courage, because it’s not easy to do.

Every contribution, every kind word, and every person who shares this story becomes part of my miracle.
I am deeply grateful for your support, your generosity, and for walking beside me on this journey which, though painful, has also been profoundly transformative.

I firmly believe that a grateful heart is a magnet for miracles — and I wish that everyone reading this may receive theirs, too.

With love and gratitude,
Sofi
