Miss Iowa's OutstandingTeen program

Dear Friends and Family,
In January, I competed at the Miss Cedar Valley’s Outstanding Teen competition and was excited to bring home the crown. Miss Cedar Valley is a local affiliate of the Miss America Organization and aims to “promote scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living and community involvement for America’s teens.” The program consists of several parts of competition – an interview in front of a panel of judges, talent, physical fitness, evening wear and an on-stage question. All competitors are between the ages of 13 and 17 years of age.
The next step for me is competing at the Miss Iowa’s Outstanding Teen competition in Davenport on June 9, 10 and 11. The teen crowned at state will go on to the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen competition in August in Orlando. This program has become one of the top scholarship providers for teen girls in the United States.
I am so proud to share what this program has done for me. Not only has it provided me opportunities to share my love of baton twirling, it has helped me develop my passion for reading into a platform of Books Build Better Brains. I have collected over 500 new and gently used books for children in my community. I served as a volunteer -- reading to young children with the Reach Out and Read program, helping label donated books for Raising Readers of Story County and assisting with the Step Into Storybooks event. I have even had the opportunity to talk with my local legislators to share my thoughts and learn their views on supporting Iowa’s children to becoming successful readers.
