Minorities in Shark Sciences Hair Donation Fund

Hello,

My name is Jonathon Kuntz, I am a graduate student studying shark ecology at the University of California - Merced. I have been very lucky and privileged to be studying what I love, especially in a field where this luxury is not afforded to those who are marginalized and underrepresented. I realize that students of color in my field face many obstacles on their scientific journey whether it be resource inaccessibility or a lack of representation. In particular, women of color are highly underrepresented in the scientific community, and even more so in shark research which is crucial to address. Therefore, I am starting a fundraiser in the hope of providing support to the women who are working tremendously hard to dismantle the obstacles they face. I am asking for monetary donations to support the Minorites in Shark Sciences (MISS) 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

This will be a hair donation fundraiser! For every $100 raised to support MISS, in exchange I will donate 1 inch of hair to the Children With Hair Loss 501(c)3 nonprofit. This organization provides human hair replacements at no cost to children and young adults facing medically related hair loss. When a child's hair is lost due to Cancer treatments, Alopecia, Trichotillomania, Burns, etc., the painful effects are far deeper than just cosmetic. With your support, we can help a child regain their confidence with a new wig at no cost to them, while simultaneously boosting early career support for women of color in shark science!

Children With Hair Loss has an ideal minimum hair donation of 10 inches, so I have made the goal $1000. However, I am hoping we can raise more! 100% of donations will fund MISS’s diversity initiatives to support Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Pacific Islander, and Asian women, all of which are heavily involved and contribute greatly to shark research. Donations will fund scholarships, allowing early career recipients to participate in shark science internship opportunities with organizations like Bimini Shark Lab and Oceans Research.
