This is an uncomfortable request but a necessary one. Here's the story. Kimberly was hospitalized for five days in August, 2013, with a serious liver infection. Because she was in the process of changing her job status from agency to full time, she was covered by Cobra insurance. Apparently there is a cap on their coverage, and Kimberly received a hospital bill for nearly $14,000. In addition, every doctor who came to see her and consult on her case billed her separately. A further frustration was, even after all the tests, transfusions, and biopsies, Kimberly left the hospital without a clear answer as to what caused the infection.
September, 2014, Kimberly was admitted again (this time for 6 days) with the same symptoms. Again, after all the tests, scans, and biopsies, she was released without a clear diagnosis. This time she had better insurance coverage, but still was served with a bill for $6,000.
One of the specialists suggested Kimberly should go to the liver clinic at University of Michigan. She went to the clinic, the doctors there ran more tests and delivered a clear (but scary) diagnosis. Kimberly has a large tumor (probably benign) in the liver which has to be removed because it has been bleeding. In addition, on the opposite side of the liver there is a lesion which also must be removed. Her surgery is scheduled for February 18. Recovery time is estimated to be 8-12 weeks.
