Our beautiful dog Miniatura “Minnie” Snowflake has always been a happy and healthy girl so we were nowhere near prepared for her first ever medical emergency, especially since she had her annual exam just a month ago and her vet said that she was well.
Me and some members of my family noticed Minnie’s appetite change sometime last week; she ate a little bit of dry food but still gobbled up wet food like a maniac. She was still drinking water but she was a lot more thirstier. Her extra water intake definitely contributed to her having accidents in the house which hasn’t happened since her puppyhood. Later on during the weekend, she started gradually bleeding from her private area and she was constantly licking herself. After discovering a bloody accident this morning in addition to her running a fever and being lethargic, I immediately called her vet and they had an opening with another vet. The vet who examined her did an x-ray and flash ultrasound and found that she had pyometra (a life-threatening infection; bacteria and pus in her uterus leaking out of her private area) and said that Minnie needed emergency surgery to remove her infected uterus. The surgery was scheduled for the next morning but by some miracle, she was able to have it done later in the day. Had Minnie not had this surgery, she would’ve left our family a lot sooner than later; she’s about to turn 8 years old so she’s still a young pup. Thankfully, the surgery was a success and Minnie is back home currently on the mend to being herself again.
However, this sudden health crisis along with not having pet insurance, brought a lot of financial strain. I knew I had to do whatever was necessary for Minnie to get better; the vet suggested applying for a Care Credit card after giving me estimates and I did so while I was there. Upon approval, I pretty much maxed it out to cover the costs of her emergency surgery and vet bill and whatnot. While the card covered the costs for now, it is still a huge amount to pay off even with a year’s deferred interest. Anyone who knows me knows that I really hate having to ask for help but right now is a time I would really appreciate anything you can give as we continue to make sure Minnie’s recovery goes smoothly and to hopefully live more years with our family❤️
