Help Maho Present the Minimum Movement Catalog

Donation protected
Hi. I'm Maho, creator of Minimum Movement Catalog
Today, I'm asking for your help for my first solo exhibition in NY in June 2022.

The Minimum Movement Catalog project started as research about my Japanese-ness through body language, by archiving movements from the West and East, examining the kinetic and symbolic meaning of each movement language.

The project has been presented as successful dance performances at New York theaters (Dixon Place, CPR, Snug Harbor Cultural Center), influential festivals (Movement Research at the Judson Church, Whenever Wherever Festival), residency programs (LEIMAY, New Dance Alliance), and has received academic support from the Performance and Interactive Media Arts and Computer Science department at Brooklyn College.

I graduated from the Performance and Interactive Media Art MFA program at Brooklyn College in 2021. As the milestone of this degree, I was planning to have a gallery exhibition of Minimum Movement Catalog as my thesis presentation. I had reserved the Umwelt Gallery in Brooklyn (seen in the video above) for my presentation, but due to COVID-19, the school's safety policy changed in the middle of my process, which meant I had to present the performance online instead of in-person.

One year later in 2022, luckily, the Umwelt Gallery has offered to help produce my solo exhibition. I'm very grateful to Umwelt for providing their amazing space! However, I have a short amount of time to cover expenses beyond the venue. To make the most of this opportunity, I need your support to realize this project.

Money raised will cover costs of the solo exhibition, including -
・artist fee (3 performers- Miles, Carolyn, + ) to demonstrate the catalog, sound artists, Max/MSP software creator, video editor, photographer, videographer, production manager)
・rehearsal / creation studio rental fee (42 hours of studio rehearsals)
・production costs (props, costumes, exhibition catalog)
・promotion expenses (website, social media)

The exhibition will be presented at Umwelt Gallery June 3rd and 4th, and this fundraiser will remain open through June 18th.

I came to New York to be a part of the most exciting contemporary art scene, and your support will be an enormous help to me as a striving Japanese artist in New York, especially after COVID-19.

My mission is to create movement artworks connected to embodied Asian gesture, in the multicultural context of New York. I will be so grateful to make the future with you.

Love,
Maho
