Mini Mermaid Running Club UK

Mini Mermaid Running Club UK (MMRC UK), for girls age 7-11, uses physical activity combined with mindfulness to strengthen girls’ self-esteem and resilience at a critical developmental point/time in their lives.

Our programmes, which comprise discussions, journal work, games, activities and structured workouts, create a fun, safe, confidence-building environment. The programme culminates with a 5km challenge.

Girls who participate in Mini Mermaids show increased resilience, confidence and well-being and are more comfortable moving their bodies. This positivity permeates all aspects of their lives, from social interactions and school to long-term goals and aspirations.

1. According to the Youth Sport Trust, girls as young as 7 cite a lack of confidence as a reason to stop being physically active.
2. Growing bodies of research connect socio-economic deprivation with lack of physical activity.
3. The lack of physical activity leads to poor mental health and low aspirations later in life.

Mini Mermaids helps to break this cycle by providing a grassroots antidote to the epidemic of declining physical activity among girls and the long-term impact. We strive to provide an accessible experience that introduces physical activity, positively impacts self-confidence and encourages greater aspirations and ambitions.

Mini Mermaids is a 4 year programme, delivered in small group settings (10-12 participants) over an 8-week period per year. Run in schools and community centres, Mini Mermaids provide a comprehensive, ready-to-execute curriculum and resource kit. Mini Mermaid coaches receive all materials necessary to deliver the programme, as well as training resources before and during the 8-week sessions.

INCREASED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: After completing Mini Mermaids, girls have an increase awareness of and confidence in their physical abilities. Mini Mermaids create a safe, judgement free environment in which girls engage in different types of physical activity. In these environments, girls feel more comfortable being active, move for longer and engage more frequently. Ultimately, girls experience the joy of being active and recognise the corresponding effect on their overall well-being.

: Throughout Mini Mermaids, girls routinely explore their inner dialogue (Mini Mermaid - Inner Cheerleader and Siren - Inner Critic) and learn to identify the two voices and distinguish between the messages they deliver. Over time, girls turn their Mini Mermaid voice into a powerful force and silence their inner critic. They gain confidence, express pride in themselves and believe they are good at things.  This confidence permeates all aspects of their lives.

STRONGER RESILIENCE: In Mini Mermaids, girls set and achieve a goal they previously thought was impossible. During the process, they experience setbacks and learn how to overcome these difficulties. As a result, they begin to replace fear of failure with the power of possibility. Learning to persevere through challenges is critical for learning new skills. Empowered with this resilience, girls may have greater aspirations and ambitions.

PROGRAMME RESOURCES: Within the programmes, we continually evaluate the value children receive, from the curriculum and materials to the programme locations. We are fortunate to be able to access school’s halls and playgrounds for the majority of our programmes; when working in communities, our team find and hire community centres. The centres must include both safe indoor and outdoor spaces.

In addition to the professionally-developed curriculums, our programmes provide children with materials to record and celebrate their experience, come together as a team, and allow them to continually reflect on the experience and their achievements. Each child receives a high quality t-shirt; a full-colour 28 page journal designed to capture their imagination and reflect on each week’s lesson; and a 5K challenge bib and a fabulous medal and certificate upon completion of the programmes.

Also, we provide our tremendous volunteer coaches with the training materials they will need to run the programme.
