Say hello to the toughest woman we all know, Mindy Jacobson! She is so tough that she has fractured two cobalt chrome rods that were implanted in her back during an intense procedure to correct scoliosis almost 3 years ago. More details about the actual procedure are below.
We couldn't have gotten through the recovery period of her previous surgery without the love and support of our friends and family. This time around, we are equally blessed by an outpouring of love and support from everyone. Mindy's mom is here helping us with the kids and the house. Mindy and I are appreciative of all the offers we have received for meals and other offers of help. I'm setting up this GoFundMe for those of you that might prefer to donate the cost of a meal or help monetarily with medical expenses.
I will post updates on her surgery here and to Facebook.
What: Surgery to correct the non-union/pseudoarthrosis somewhere between the L1 and S1.
Why: Mindy has been suffering from back pain. X-rays showed that the her rods are both fractured around the same point in her back. The cause has been determined that one or more of her vertebrae haven’t fused. Before the rods fractured, they were supporting her back, but when they fractured, her spine began to receive the full weight of her upper body and the pain began.
How: Dr. Daubs will be performing the surgery again. He considers this a corrective follow up to the first procedure and something that he has done often, thought not always necessary with every patient. He will reinforce the vertical, fractured rods and place two more rods horizontal to create a brace around the area. Then he will place more bone graft and protein between the vertebrae that haven’t healed into solid bone yet.
When: Surgery is scheduled for 12/5/2017. Recovery will be around 6 weeks with the worst part being the first two weeks after the surgery. Recovery is anticipated to be much easier than her previous operation and recovery
Where: UMC and our house, Las Vegas and also Mindy’s lower back.
