A Comprehensive Film That Tells Mick Moloney's Story
MIND YOURSELF: The Mick Moloney Story is a cinematic celebration of a cultural giant whose heart was in sync with the music of Ireland and the diaspora of millions of Irish people throughout the world. MIND YOURSELF is the only authorized film to tell Mick’s story—not only his unparalleled contributions to Irish traditional music, but also his deep commitment to culture, community, and the human spirit.
Part biography and part musical celebration, this documentary invites audiences to experience the wit, warmth, and genius of Mick Moloney—a master Irish musician, singer, scholar, and passionate advocate for social justice. Through never-before-seen footage, intimate interviews, and masterful storytelling, the film traces Mick’s path from his early days in Ireland to his discovery and promotion of traditional Irish music in his homeland, in America, and on global stages across many continents.
Why Mick? Why now?
Mick Moloney passed away July 27, 2022, and left a void in the traditional Irish music scene. It's time to share his story with those who knew him, those who didn't, and for generations to come.
Over a lifetime of performing and exploring traditional Irish music, Mick discovered and advanced the culture of Irish music in America through interviews, mentoring, performance, as a festival promoter and scholar. Through these endeavors he created a worldwide community of musicians, audiences, and scholars of traditional music and culture. Using archival footage, newly uncovered master performances, insightful and often emotional interviews with his closest friends and collaborators, MIND YOURSELF will capture the essence of a true musical and cultural genius.
This is not just the story of a man, but of a movement—of how one artist bridged continents, cultures, and causes. Mick Moloney’s music will move you, mightily, but his spirit will stay with you long after the final note. He was a transformative force in Irish America—a brilliant musician, pioneering scholar, and passionate advocate who brought dignity, depth, and authenticity to a culture often reduced to stereotype.
His work as a folklorist led him to rediscover Irish tradition bearers and present them on stage. Founder of seminal bands Green Fields of America and Cherish the Ladies, he championed new voices, opened doors for women, and revealed the rich connections between Irish, African, and Appalachian traditions. Through music, research, and storytelling, Mick built bridges across cultures and generations, leaving behind an extraordinary archive and an enduring legacy that continues to inspire.
Production Team: What's it going to take?
Our team—Fletcher Fischer (Executive Producer), Dan Neely (Producer/Writer), Eoin McGuigan (Producer/Director of Photography), Seamus Egan (Music Director) and Scott Esmond (Editor) —has already filmed 25 interviews, with more shoots planned in Dublin, Limerick, Barcelona, New York City, Philadelphia, Milwaukee and Chicago.
This is a major undertaking, requiring a large, carefully managed production, paying for crews, equipment, travel, rights, and all the other moving parts. Many of the arts grants we’d normally rely on have been reduced or disappeared altogether, making your support more important than ever.
Help Bring This Film Across the Finish Line!
Fletcher has already made significant investments to get the project underway, but it will take a collective effort to bring it across the finish line. Whatever you can do to help us tell that story would mean the world to our project team, Mick’s fellow musicians, close friends and family.
Please consider donating or sharing this fundraiser, especially as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and Irish Heritage Month. Together, we can honor Mick’s legacy and ensure his story inspires generations to come!
