Mind To Move Online Classes

Donation protected
During this challenging and unprecedented time, where millions of people are being isolated in their homes, I am taking this opportunity to make Mind To Move available online for everyone in their homes by setting up weekly classes on Zoom.

Mind To Move Online Classes will run every Tuesday at 12pm (UK time) and will run for 30mins.

- What is Mind To Move?

Mind To Move is an outreach programme  devised and delivered by Julia James-Griffiths out of The Box Project.

The programme involves delivering community movement workshops, for those aged 18 - 65+ with experience of mental health issues; no dance experience necessary. Each workshop involves discussion, relaxation exercises, and led movement improvisation; with a focus in exploring and enjoying the benefits of movement and creative expression. Participants are encouraged to take part in whatever way they feel comfortable.

All workshops, as a part of this project, have ended with a short excerpt sharing of The Box and an opportunity for participants to give feedback.

The Box  is a dance theatre piece that explores the impact of depression and how our society responds to it.

- In what way are Mind To Move Online Classes different to the workshops?

Apart from being online, Mind To Move Online Classes won't involve any discussion (other than introductions) and also won't end with a sharing of The Box.

Mind To Move Online Classes will begin with a short introduction, before moving into the 30 min class. The class will begin with some relaxation exercises, followed by led movement improvisation.

Mind To Move Workshops have run as a part of The Box Project. This means that the running of the workshops has been supported by the funding given to the project. These classes however are run on a voluntary basis.

Mind To Move Workshops are also specifically just for people with experience of mental health issues.
We are all, however, facing a very challenging and difficult time at the moment, and the effect that this is going to have on everyone's mental health and well-being is undisputed. Therefore, though these online classes will still have the primary focus of supporting those with mental health issues, they will also be open to anyone else who feels they need it for their own mental health and well-being during this difficult time.

Lets all find some release and joy together, and what it means to be alive and free to move, even if we are limited on where we can move to!

- How much will each class cost?

Classes are given free of charge. But should you wish to donate to support the running of these classes you can do so here.  Any support given is appreciated but not necessary in order to participate in a class.
These are hard times for us all, so please only give if you can!

Suggested donation: £3-5 / what you can

- Who is Julia James-Griffiths?

I am a choreographer, performer and dance teacher based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

I started the research for The Box Project back in 2016, and the touring of the project began last year across Scotland. I plan to continue touring the project both within and outside of Scotland and the UK in the coming years.

I have a great passion for dance and mental health, and believe that dance and movement can be really powerful in both communicating the invisible struggles of mental health issues, as well as bringing some release and healing to them.

This project initially came into being out of my own personal experiences and struggles with depression, and it has since become a collective project of voices and experiences from a large number of people who also desire to see a change in how mental health issues are treated in our society.

A short film about the project can be found here:
