The world has changed rapidly with the spread of Coronavirus and so we’ve had to adapt to these unprecedented times. Colombia is on compulsory quarantine until 26th April. There will be millions of people that will not be able to work and earn money during this time.
Our initial idea to start a crowdfunding campaign was to support the families of our staff at Siembra Boutique Hostel , which is located near a small jungle town called Minca, that lies at the foothills of Sierra Nevada mountain range in the north of Colombia, just outside of Santa Marta.
This beautiful community consists of about 800 people, many of whom depend on the local tourism industry to survive (the main source of income for this town), and as such in the coming months a large number of them will find themselves out of work and with no income.
As such seeing the sheer scale of this pandemic we decided to expand our campaign so that we can help as many people here as possible.
Many governments around the world are now guaranteeing people’s wages during the lockdown whilst businesses are required to close. Such a safety net doesn’t exist in Colombia. which is why we have created this Go Fund Me campaign.
Where will your money go?
Since the country is on lockdown and borders are closed until 30th May, possibly longer, tourism will be hit hard in Colombia, and
no one knows when normality will resume.
Your money will provide local people from the community in Minca with food and medicine for their families.
We would also like to use a percentage of the money to begin growing crops to feed the local community, so not only will we provide instant care for those most in need, but we will also aim to provide sustainable, long-term food security for their future. Something we hope will be an important part of all communities in the world after this pandemic passes.
Making a donation:
If you donate:
£5 will feed a family of 4 for a day
£35 will feed for a family of 4 for a week
£140 will feed for a family of 4 for a month
For those that are unable to donate through GoFundMe, we have also set up a Paypal account to accept donations:
How else can you help?
Please share this with as many family and friends as you can. The more people you tell about this GoFundMe campaign, the more successful it will be. We realise that many people are going through tough times, so any contribution you can make will be greatly appreciated.
If you are part of the Minca community and you want to donate food, seeds for planting or other necessities, please contact us and we can ensure that everyone is supported during these tough times.
Siembra means ‘to sow’ in Spanish, so to thank everyone who makes a donation we plan to grow a plant or tree in your name. In that way, there will always be a permanent reminder of your generosity here at Siembra.
Perhaps you’ve been to Minca or just to Colombia. You’ll know that the people here are very kind, generous and funny. Maybe you’ve stayed in one of the hostels in the area and interacted with the people that live in Minca. You’ll know that even a small donation will make a huge impact on people’s lives.
Together we can get through this crisis and be even stronger. Thank you for your generosity and for helping our community here in Minca. We can’t wait to welcome you to stay with us, once these turbulent times are over.
*By using Go Fund Me, it ensures that any money raised on this campaign will go to help the local community in Minca.*
