HELP US FINANCE SUSTAINABLE RURAL COMMUNITIES IN BRAZIL

At Carbon Society, we believe that financing sustainable communities begins by empowering those on the frontlines of climate change. This is why we are launching the Minas Gerais Sustainable Community (MGSC) Project, an initiative to support smallholder coffee farmers in Minas Gerais, Brazil’s largest coffee-producing state, accounting for nearly 50% of the country's total output.

Escalating greenhouse gas emissions are fuelling climate change, resulting in long-term shifts in temperature and weather patterns that disrupt global ecosystems and impact human activities.

Agriculture, particularly through traditional farming methods such as monoculture, slash-and-burn, chemical use, and deforestation, exacerbates these adverse climate effects, posing increasing risks to farming communities globally.

Through this project, we aim to regenerate degraded and unused land by implementing tailored agroforestry systems that:

Boost carbon sequestration.
Improve soil health and water retention.
Reduce waste and eliminate toxic chemical use.
Prioritise the planting of native species within commercial coffee agroforestry systems.
Promote biodiversity through species diversification.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to transform traditional coffee farms into regenerative agroforestry systems that not only improve farmer livelihoods, but also heal ecosystems, increase biodiversity, and boost climate resilience.

OUR APPROACH

Our approach is farm-led, meaning that we develop a system that works for each farmer, considering their preferences and generational traditions. We also do not create instability by working on existing coffee plantations, but we work instead on degraded and unused land, showcasing farmers the benefits of regenerative agriculture first-hand.

Our work combines international best practices with local knowledge. In collaboration with a local NGO, partners, and subject-matter experts, we support the entire supply chain, from smallholder farmers to coffee traders, in the Minas Gerais region, delivering sustainable, traceable, and high-integrity nature-based solutions, we provide:

Personalised support for the assessment, design, implementation and management of agroforestry systems;
Hands-on workshops and educational programs for farmers;
Continuous technical assistance based on the specific needs of each farming family.

WHY IT MATTERS

Minas Gerais is one of the world’s most important coffee-producing regions. However, the effects of climate change are placing increasing pressure on its ecosystems and communities.

Alongisde its climate benefits, MGSC project is designed to:

Support production diversification and increase farm productivity;
Generate passive income for farmers through high-quality certified carbon credits;
Improve the quality and revenue of coffee production;
Promote regenerative agriculture with organic inputs to protect soil life;
Foster rural development and promote long-term environmental stewardship.

WHERE THE MONEY GOES

With your help, we’ll:

Work one-on-one with farmers to assess their land and co-design commercial coffee agroforestry systems;
Deliver hands-on planning and educational activities, and ongoing tailored technical support;
Partner with trusted organizations like and local experts to ensure the project is rooted in the community and commercially viable for farmers to ensure long-term success and stability.

NEXT STEPS: CERTIFIED AND MEASURABLE IMPACT

The initial funding will allow the project to start its certification journey with the Gold Standard, ensuring measurable and concrete impact by:

Passing the Gold Standard audits;
Being independently validated and verified by third-party auditors;
Being monitored and reported on by the on-the-ground team;
Certifying the project impact, currently set to be aligning with up to 15 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) over the full implementation;
