Miltina's Miracle

Donation protected
Miltina was born June 6, 1973, in West Africa, Liberia and at 14 years old she came to the US with her grandmother to start a new life. Miltina gained an education and pursued a career working with individuals with developmental and physical disabilities. She was blessed with 3 amazing children, Fidel, Giovan, and Savannah.

Miltina is avidly involved with her church, Praise Tabernacle, and is often found on their food truck at 6 am feeding the homeless at Kennedy Plaza in downtown Providence.

In February of 2015, Miltina began to feel discomfort in her abdomen and lower back which was dismissed by her physician.

One week before Thanksgiving 2015, Miltina found herself in agony and drove herself to the ER. After 12 hours of testing, the doctors diagnosed her with ovarian cancer; stage 4. She had a really hard time accepting this heavy diagnosis and struggled to find a way to tell her children.

Miltina spent all her savings to go to an Oncologist in Georgia for a second opinion.  The oncologist ran all the tests she could and on December 16, 2015, confirmed she had stage 4 ovarian cancer and had 6 months to live.

Something you need to know about Miltina is that she has TREMENDOUS faith. Anyone who knows Miltina would tell you her famous line, “God is in control.”

Eventually, Miltina accepted her diagnosis and began treatment right away and had surgery. Though she lost her hair, she never lost her faith or her smile. Miltina continued to go on the food truck every Saturday morning to feed the homeless, and would even clean the church regardless. Although Miltina was unable to go back to work she made it a priority to stay involved in her community. She continues to be a source of encouragement to all.

On January 12, 2017, over a year later, Miltina looked back on her calendar at the 6-month mark she was told would be the end of her life. She received the call from her care team of oncologists stating that she was in REMISSION!

Miltina remembers the joy vividly of that day her and her children rejoiced over winning their mother back from her battle with cancer.

The joy was perfect while it lasted. Memorial Day weekend of 2017, Miltina’s cancer had come back. This time the doctors put her on double doses of chemo. But Miltina didn’t give up. Her body may have cancer but her soul remains vibrant and alive. Each time she’d go for treatment the doctors would lay the chemo bags in her lap and watch her pray over them before administering the chemo.

Today, the doctors have told her that there is no scientific explanation for her to still be alive and whoever she is holding her faith in has been sustaining her for the past two and a half years. The doctors state they have never had a patient survive on this type of aggressive chemo for this long.

A few weeks after her doctors told her this, Miltina felt led to share her testimony with her church family. She thanked everyone for their continued prayers, help and support. A doctor who was sitting in church that morning heard her testimony and offered an alternative treatment to supplement her chemotherapy.

Miltina’s miracle is her faith and her story is her legacy; one of advocacy, of faith and of love. Today, Miltina has exhausted all of her finances on her care and is living off of a fixed income for her and her children. While Miltina was excited and eager to take advantage of this more natural supplement to her chemo treatment, she has had to ask her friends and family for help not only physically, but also financially. The treatments she’s seeking are not covered by insurance; costing $435 a week for the 3 treatments. But at this point, Miltina wants to explore every avenue possible for her treatment if it means she will get to see Fidel get married, Giovan graduate college, or Savanah go to her prom.
