On January 30th, a basement fire occurred at the Millvale Food + Energy Hub due to an electrical system malfunction. The Hub serves as an anchor and gathering point for both for-profit and nonprofit organizations, and is an important and unique site of collaboration and community gathering.
The response from Millvale, our supporters, and area first responders has been incredible. Thankfully everyone is safe, and we are grateful for the EMS and Fire teams who provided a tactical and strategic response that mitigated the damage. We are now working directly with Millvale Borough, Allegheny County, and insurers to get our building back into operation as quickly and safely as possible.
To do this, we need help and are seeking community donations to help rebuild the Hub and support organizations like Sprezzatura, 412 Food Rescue, Fractracker Alliance, the Food Trust, and New Sun Rising. Donations will also help with the transition to alternate workspace, costs insurance won't cover, and upgrades to infrastructure.
The organizations that are housed in the Hub are dedicated to creating vibrant and equitable communities. It is a place for people to come together to work on projects, share ideas, and create solutions to the pressing issues facing our region. Nonprofits and social enterprises often operate on lean budgets and depend on community support even in the best and most predictable of seasons. So, an event like a fire presents considerable challenges that are both logistical and financial in nature.
By donating, you are investing in the future of the community, supporting those organizations that are leading change, and demonstrating resilience at this important time in our shared history. Any donation, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated and will help rebuild the Hub, support those organizations whose work is critical to creating a vibrant and equitable community, and help ensure the timely reopening of the Millvale Food + Energy Hub.
