Million Meter Row 2020
Tax deductible
Hello! My name is Vaughn Parker and I am captain of the University of Illinois Men's Rowing Team. Over the course of 10 days, I am trying to set a new world record for the 1,000,000 meters row in the 19 and under heavyweight category. I am spending 10-15 hours a day on a Concept2 rowing machine working towards this goal.
Since our team is a club sport, we have to collect dues from the rowers in order to pay for boats, equipment, racing fees, gas, and insurance. These dues are regularly $1,500-$2,000 per year for each person on the team.
Every year, we lose outstanding rowers who can’t join, or have to quit, the team because they can't afford these dues. When this happens, everybody loses: the athlete, the team, the university, and the sport. My goal is to make sure this doesn't happen again.
This year, we are starting a scholarship fund to help enable promising athletes who could not otherwise participate to pay the rowing team fees. While no one knows what college athletics is going to look like in the fall, I can assure you that your tax-deductible donation to the Illinois Rowing Association will be earmarked to help a deserving college athlete as soon as competition resumes.
Any donation will help make an impact. Thank you in advance for any contribution you can make, it will be so helpful to our team. As a bonus, for any donation of $100 or more, I will reach out to you by email and send you an Illinois Rowing T-shirt.
