Miller Place High School-Class of 2020 Legacy Fund
Donation protected
The Class of 2020 of Miller Place, Long Island, NY has lost out of some of the most memorable experiences high school Seniors should have. Due to the COVID Pandemic, they missed their Spring sporting events, Spring Concerts, the Variety Show, Art Show, Senior Trip to Great Adventure,(first trip since 9/11), Academic Awards Ceremony, Sport Awards Night, Senior Prom, and the traditional graduation ceremony which was scheduled for June 26th. Although an outdoor ceremony is being planned for Friday, July 24th, it won't be like anything the alumni have celebrated in the past. Graduates will be spaced apart on the track, with only four guests allowed.
As a 1976 graduate of MPHS and RECENTLY retired English teacher of the district (June 30th, 2020), I've attended countless proms and graduations; it is something I never tired of. The 240 Seniors have lost out on the events which bring closure to their high school years and create memories to look back upon.
This GoFundMe account is to create "Gift Bags" to leave on each grad's chair on July 24th. (There are other contingency dates also planned) A $100 Amazon Gift Card is the goal, so that each student can purchase what they need for staying local for college, still going away, leaving for the military, or working. We are also looking to order Face Masks/Gators, and other symbolic items to add to the bags.
I personally know many of these students through my classes and Service Club, of which I've been the advisor for over 12 years. The Service CLub motto is 'KEEP IT CLOSE TO HOME AND CLOSE TO THE HEART" and this is the perfect opportunity for you to celebrate the Class of 2020. They have lost out on creating the high school memories so many of us have taken for granted...or forgotten:) If your years at MPHS helped shape who you are, led you to your career, hobbies, spouse, and friendships you have, I invite you to PAY IT FORWARD and make a donation of any amount. Any funds that come in after the graduation ceremony will be used to fund a scholarship named "The Resiliency Award", which will be given to a 2021 graduate who was directly affected by the COVID virus.
If you had me as a teacher, you may remember the novel Les Miserables and more recently the memoir Night. Both books deal with the same concept..."One person of integrity can make a difference." I invite you to make a difference for the MPHS Class of 2020. Let them know that they are being supported by the people who can also claim the have a Miller Place connection.
Time is of an essence, so please share this with other MPHS grads or staff you know. I'm looking to put these gift bags together the week of July 20th, so your prompt response is appreciated. We never know how our small acts of kindness can impact another; I'm asking you all to help celebrate the Class of 2020 and let them know they have not been overlooked.
With Panther Pride...
Sincerely,
Catherine Kos-Danowski
