Hey all you cool cats and kittens,
I'm uncomfortable asking this in such tough times, but am putting aside my pride to ask for help from those who are willing and able. I was super fortunate to obtain my top surgery (chest masculinization surgery) back on February 6th, 2020 from Dr. Kant Lin at the University of Kentucky. I feel so lucky and happy to even have had it. As we know, COVID-19 has affected all of us in expected and unexpected ways. Even though I have been successful (so far) in not contracting the virus, it has impacted my ability to pay for my top surgery costs.
I planned on getting a service industry job this summer to pay off the cost of the surgery because my salary as a graduate worker is only $14,400. The total cost of my surgery, including various procedures (mammogram, ultrasound, pre-op & post-op checks, small revision), was $36,000. My insurance covered 80% of the procedure up until my out-of-pocket maximum of $6,200.
Due to COVID-19 there are a lack of job opportunities, and I didn't want to put myself or others at risk of contracting and/or spreading the virus. I applied for University of Kentucky's Patient Financial Assistance to help pay for the cost of the surgery, but was denied because the surgery is considered an "elective" procedure -- even though it was covered by UK's insurance ... confusing I know. I got my mammogram covered by the Patient Financial Assistance and so that is why I am asking for $5,200 instead of the $6,200 that I was originally responsible for.
This summer I went swimming topless -- in more ways than one -- for the first time. It felt fantastic feeling the sun and water on my chest in ways that I never imagined being able to. My anxieties about my body have literally been lifted off my chest. These fantastic feelings, though, are dampened by my looming medical bills, which I have a really difficult time paying for. If you are comfortable, and able, please consider donating to my fundraiser to help me pay off my top surgery costs.
