Miles for OCRA
Roughly 21,410 women will receive a diagnosis of ovarian cancer in the United States this year. Over 13,000 women will die from ovarian cancer this year.
Cancer has been a pervasive health issue in my family throughout my entire life. In 2006, I lost my aunt to breast cancer. In 2019, I lost my maternal grandfather to lung cancer, and shortly after, I lost my maternal grandmother to ovarian cancer. My paternal grandfather has been battling prostate cancer for nearly 4 years. While the disease's prevalence in my family has seemed anomalous, it is far from it. It is estimated that nearly 40% of all men and women will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime.
There are a plethora of cancer foundations supporting the research and treatment of specific forms of the disease, including lung, breast, and prostate cancers- all of which hold a special place in my heart. I have decided, however, to establish Miles for OCRA to support the research devoted to combatting ovarian cancer. The Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (OCRA) is the largest and oldest ovarian cancer charity dedicated to advocacy, funding, and patient support. The alliance's mission is to invest time, money, and other resources in the most promising science and politics to provide the highest possible quality of care. There are so many strong, courageous, resilient women that deserve the very best chance at beating this disease, and my hope is that even this small contribution will help them achieve that. I know my grandmother would have wanted just the same for herself and those that came before and after her.
To that end, I have decided to integrate my passion for fitness and movement into this fundraiser. I intend to raise $5 for every mile that I run over the course of the next few months. Every day I run, I will post the mileage, and corresponding donations can be made. For example, a 5 mile run would correspond to a $25 donation. However, anything at all helps, so please donate whenever/whatever you feel is best for you. There is no limit on the number of donations allowed for each run.
Thank you in advance for your support. Let's get running!!!
