The Living Vine is a Christian Maternity Home located in beautiful Savannah, Georgia. It provides a safe and loving residential program to expectant, oftentimes teenage, mothers. It is a safe place for expectant mothers to prepare themselves for the blessing of childbirth, as well as learn valued life principles, including parenting skills, and continuing education and job preparation.
Over the years, both in my capacity as an attorney and as an active member of my community, I have advocated for women and mothers in desperate and terrible situations. Its always been something that has been close to my heart. When I first learned of the Living Vine, and of the unimaginable struggles and difficulties the mothers who are housed there face, I began thinking of things I can do to help.
On September 24, 2017, Chattanooga, Tennessee will host a full Ironman Race. An Ironman is a grueling 140.6 mile experience with a combination of swimming (2.4 miles), biking (112 miles) and running (26.2 miles). Its one of the most difficult athletic events around and many participants train for years to undergo such an event. It takes non-professionals between 12-18 hours to complete.
I am not a triathalete. I am barely an athlete. I competed in first triathalon only last year and before that I may have run a couple 5ks and maybe a half marathon in the last 10 years. Until recently, I have never ridden a bike for more than 5 miles and I have certainly never swam for longer than 10 mintues.
My Campaign is called Miles for Moms and I want to help raise $5,000.00 for the Living Vine, to be used for the benefit of their residents. I have signed up for the Chattanooga Ironman and will race on behalf of the Living Vine here in Savannah. I figure what I will go through to complete this Race is nothing compared to what the Mom's to be at the Living Vine have to face.
