Miles for Change Challenge (Cal Tri)

Miles for Change is a community-wide training challenge hosted by Cal Tri to raise awareness and support for causes of diversity, justice, and inclusion. We challenge all triathletes and cyclists to train with purpose by reaching out and raising money and awareness for their chosen causes by pushing themselves to the limit.

This also marks the launch of the Cal Triversity Initiative. As students and triathletes, we believe that we have the greatest responsibility to enact change in the spheres where we hold the greatest influence. Spearheaded by the efforts of senior minority athletes on our team, this new initiative aims to lower the barriers of participation for historically underrepresented and disadvantaged groups in our multisport community. You can read about the initiative by clicking here

WHEN: June 19th - June 21st

HOW THE CHALLENGE WORKS:

1.  Join our Strava Club  and Facebook Event to track our collective activity and stay up to date!

2. Choose a challenge (anyone can be an athlete!):

     - Century Challenge:
Cover as many miles in distance as you can. If you don’t have a bike, you can tackle the #Marathon challenge by attempting to run 26 miles (or however many miles you can do)!
     - Everest Challenge:
Climb as many feet of elevation as you can. Summit Everest by climbing 29,029 feet (but only if you’re ready!)

3. Promote Miles for Change and find families and friends to sponsor you!

Enlist your family and friends to support you in your challenge, both physically (it’s always great to have friends training with you or cheering you on!) and by pledging to sponsor you and your chosen cause:
           - $1 for every mile
           - $1 for every 100 feet
     - Of course, sponsors are welcome to donate whatever they’re comfortable with, but this sponsorship framework is suggested!

4. Choose a justice-oriented cause to support:

There are many ways to bring positive and lasting change to our communities, so Miles for Change is not focused on supporting one singular organization. We will be donating all funds raised according to the wishes of those who help us raise them. If you would like, you can donate to the new Cal Triversity Initiative to support underrepresented and underprivileged Cal triathletes or any other organization that is motivating you to push yourself to the limit for change.

Record who is sponsoring you HERE .

5. RIDE AND RUN as much as you can June 19-21 and record your activity on Strava:

Be sure to include “Miles for Change” in your title(s)! You can indicate which challenge you’ve chosen to tackle by including #Century #CenturyRelay #Marathon #MarathonRelay #Everest or #EverestRelay in your title. If you are on a relay team, include the names of your team members in your title.

If you would like to designate your donation to a particular organization, please include the name of the organization in your description.

6. Share your accomplishments and follow through with your sponsors!

Once you have completed your challenge, share it with everyone using “Miles for Change” and our hashtags! Share your Strava link with your families and friends and encourage them to donate their selected $/mile to the GoFundMe page!

7. Stay tuned for Miles for Change Challenge results!
After June 21st, all activities and donations will be organized to determine:
     - Total distance covered
     - Total elevation climbed
     - Athlete who rode the farthest (both in a single day and over the 3 days)
     - Athlete who climbed the highest (both in a single day and over the 3 days)
     - Athlete who raised the most money from their sponsors
     - Athletes who rode the farthest, climbed the highest, or raised the most on their behalf will win a Challenge Prize and will be eligible to   designate additional funds to an organization of their choice, as well as recognition on our social media!

FAQs:

Q: How will the raised money be distributed?

A: After the donation period closes, we will create a spreadsheet tracking all donations made to GoFundMe (along with the athletes they sponsored and organizations they choose) as well as all activities completed in the time frame (tracking any organizations in the activity comments). Any donations that are not designated for a certain organization or are contributed by sponsors or the Cal Tri team will enter a pool. This pool will be distributed accordingly:

Five installments of $100 will be reserved for Challenge Prizes.
The remainder of the money will be proportionally distributed to the organizations as they appear in the activity comments. (This will be determined by the percentage of activities that name a certain organization, not based on the distance or elevation completed in that activity).

Q: What types of organizations can I designate?

A: We believe that there are many ways to bring positive and effective change to our communities, so we will not limit the organizations we support. This challenge was inspired by the many organizations actively addressing the racial and socioeconomic injustices in our country, so we encourage you to direct your donations toward funds supporting related causes. You may choose to donate to the newly launched Cal Triversity Initiative to support the entry of underprivileged students into the sport of triathlon, or you can take a look at this list of other organizations we believe are doing important work:

 - Equal Justice Initiative
 - NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund
 - National Bail Out
 - ACLU Foundation
 - American Immigration Council
 - International Rescue Committee
 - Human Rights Campaign Foundation
 - National Urban League
 - Urban Justice Center
 - United Negro College Fund
 - No Kid Hungry

Q: Why June 19-21?

A: June 19th, or Juneteenth (Jubilee Day), is an important day of celebration among African American communities, as it marks the day in 1865 when the last Confederate State officially announced the Emancipation Proclamation. This milestone is not well-recognized by many non-African American communities, so we chose this day to spread awareness and honor it. Additionally, June 20th is the Summer Solstice, or the longest day of the year! There is no better day to tackle a long training session. In fact, it is a long-running tradition among Cal Tri enthusiasts to see how far they can bike in a single day on the Summer Solstice.
