A second chance for Mila

We are Angelica and Juanca and this is our beautiful pup, Mila, a 7 month old lab mix. She is an amazing puppy and has made us immensely  happy since we adopted her in December in Mexico. We were unsure about her breed mix, but everything became clear the moment we threw a ball and her retriever self surfaced!

Mila has been an extremely lucky puppy as many humans have loved and cared for her. Her amazing rescuer saved her when she was only a couple of months. (TW - sexual abuse) Mila was found wandering in the streets of Mexico City with clear signs of sexual abuse... it's heartbreaking how cruel some humans can be. Her tiny body struggled  to recover from two uterine prolapses, a massive internal infection and severe malnutrition. She had to undergo two surgeries to repair her internal damage, but her spirits were always high and she left the hospital after one month.



This is where her name comes from - Mila is nickname for Milagros (Miracles, in Spanish). Mila has an uncrushable spirit. She loves without condition. She's warm and friendly with humans and animals alike... She's a living miracle.


Ever since she had emergency surgery and recovered, she has dealt with incontinence. Vets thought it could be part of the physical and emotional trauma and that it might get better eventually. But something did not feel right about it and we were determined to figure it out. We went for different opinions back in Mexico, but we were not getting answers. One vet finally discovered Mila's damage was more extensive than we initially thought and he said we had very chances of getting the specialized care she needed in Mexico. That is when we decided to bring her to Chicago.

Here, one vet finally discovered some internal abnormalities and understood they have been causing her problems. He believes her first two surgeries indeed saved her life but might have permanently damaged her renal system, especially her bladder. Her kidneys have suffered tremendous pressure from all these alterations in her anatomy. The doctors made a call and placed two ureteral stents to preserve her renal function as best as possible. This procedure itself was +$7k and the doctor is unfortunately unsure if this is enough to save Mila's life - we will have to give the stents a few weeks and see how they are working.

We are desperately asking for help to afford this type of specialized care, which is her only option given her high risk of renal failure. We found an amazing vet who has helped her, even provided care at discounted rates, but it is well beyond our financial possibilities.

Hola! Somos Angélica y Juan Camilo, y esta es nuestra preciosa cachorrita, Mila. Ella tiene 7 meses y es una cruza de labrador. La adoptamos en Diciembre de 2020, en México.

Mila es una cachorrita muy suertuda porque muchas personas la han amado y cuidado. Una ellas la rescató cuando Mila tenía tan sólo un par de meses de edad. (Advertencia - contenido sensible). Mila fue encontrada con claros signos de abuso sexual, deambulando por las calles de la Ciudad de México... es desgarrador lo crueles que pueden ser algunas personas. Su pequeño cuerpecito luchó incansablemente para recuperarse de dos prolapsos uterinos, una terrible infección y desnutrición severa. Mila tuvo que ser operada dos veces para tratar de resarcir todo el daño interno que tenía, pero su espíritu nunca se quebrantó y logró salir del hospital después de más de un mes.


De ahí viene la inspiración de su nombre: Mila es un apodo para Milagros. Ella tiene un espíritu indestructible. Nos ama con toda su fuerza. Es amigable y cálida con todas las personas y animales que ve... Es un Milagro.



Todo este tiempo, después de su hospitalización, ha sufrido de incontinencia. Los veterinarios pensaron que podía ser consecuencia del trauma físico y emocional, pero que podría  mejorar con el tiempo. Pero no veíamos mejora y teníamos un mal presentimiento. Fuimos por 2das, 3eras y 4tas opiniones, hasta que nos dijeron que el daño interno de Mila fue mucho mayor del que se había creído.

Su veterinario actual sospecha que las dos primeras cirugías le salvaron la vida pero causaron daño permanente a su sistema renal, especialmente sobre su vejiga, la cual es anormalmente pequeña. Sus riñones han sufrido mucha presión por todas estas alteraciones. Los doctores decidieron que la mejor oportunidad de Mila era ponerle dos stents en los uréteres (los tubitos que conectan los riñones con la vejiga) para preservar lo mejor posible su función renal. Este "sencillo" procedimiento costó más de $7,000 dólares y el veterinario no sabe si será suficiente para salvar la vida de Mila - en algunas semanas tendremos que revisar si están cumpliendo su función y hacer más estudios de seguimiento.

Estamos pidiendo ayuda para poder cubrir estos y futuros gastos en esta atención veterinaria tan especializada. Tristemente, sólo con este tipo de atención tan costosa podremos aumentar las posibilidades de salvar la vida de Mila. El increíble veterinario que encontramos nos ha ayudado mucho, incluso nos ha hecho descuentos, pero el camino por delante es largo y estamos haciendo lo mejor para darle a Mila una segunda oportunidad en la vida.
