Milan Marathon for Alzheimer’s research ♂️
Hi, my name is Jake and I’m participating in the Milan Marathon on the 6th of April to raise money for Alzheimer’s research.
This disease hits close to home personally for myself as my mum Therese was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s about 5 years ago at the super young age of 55.
since 2018 I’ve seen every part of her life and personality drastically change due to this horrible disease.
Mum was (and still is) the most super amazing woman ever! Loves a dance, loves a cheeky drink and loves time off travelling the world. She was one of the hardest workers and had a highly important job looking after the Australian head office of a global mining company.
She was the one keeping the family running with school pick ups, dinner on the table every night after working an 11 hour day, watching me play every game of football I ever pulled the boots on for, picking me up from party’s after I’ve had too many beers at 3am, planning and booking every holiday we went on and seamlessly making every part of it look so easy.
All while treating herself to a glass of wine or a frozen margarita at days end.
she had a great squash game. Wasn’t to bad around the golf course and loved the walks on the beach we used to live on
Although mum still loves a wine, a margarita and a dance, mum can no longer do any of these things as this disease has taken all of this away from her.
As anyone who has seen someone who has Alzheimer’s or Dementia would know, this disease is truly so cruel. my beautiful mother who used to be the most super independent woman, now needs to have round the clock care and cannot be left alone.
Its not at all the ways she should be spending her retirement years.
When I saw the opportunity to run in a marathon in one of my favourite city’s, Milan. I thought it would be the perfect way to challenge myself and raise some money for an important cause which I hope one day will have a cure so families do not have to suffer with this horrible disease.
Thanks
