Baby Mila Senko's Open Heart Surgery

Donation protected
The Senkos & Andersons are fundraising to support Mila, Courtney & Brad Senko as they navigate their ongoing NICU stay in Saskatoon / Edmonton and the upcoming surgeries associated with Mila's heart condition.

At 20 weeks, Courtney and Brad discovered that their little girl had a congenital heart defect known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Depending on the severity, Mila will need up to 3 open heart surgeries in the first 3 years of her life in Edmonton and Saskatoon. Though shocking and overwhelming, Courtney and Brad pressed on and continue to plan for Mila's arrival, including moving back to Regina to be closer to family.

At 30 weeks, amid the end of the school year, new jobs and a new home, Courtney was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia. Unfortunately, this progressed rapidly. Courtney's organs began to suffer and specialists feared for Courtney and Mila's safety. At 31 weeks, Courtney was rushed to the hospital in Saskatoon. On July 1st, Mila Grace Senko was delivered in an emergency c-section at 2 pounds 8 ounces.

Though Mila's condition requires open heart surgery, she is not big enough or strong enough to undergo an operation. Mila's challenge now is to grow, grow, grow in NICU until her surgery team in Edmonton is certain she can withstand her first open heart surgery. Each surgery has an anticipated 4-6 week recovery time between Edmonton and Saskatoon, along with several check-up appointments post-op to keep a close eye on Mila. This is a long road ahead for the Senko family, but Mila is determined and growing each day.

The money raised by our community has a tangible impact for Courtney & Brad including:
  • Travel costs between Regina, Saskatoon and Edmonton
  • Accommodations and meals while Mila is in NICU and recovering from heart surgery
  • Mortgages and bills. Courtney is currently on maternity leave and Brad will be taking extensive unpaid time to be with Mila and Courtney.
  • Medical supplies and medications for Mila.

Any unused funds will be donated to the NICU at Jim Pattison Children's Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon.

Many have asked how they can help in a time like this. Giving Courtney and Brad the freedom to be with Mila as much as they can is the best answer. Financially supporting them allows them to be present as they navigate the challenges ahead with their miracle baby. Parenthood is a community effort and Mila is receiving so much love already. We are so appreciative of the support from our friends and family.
