Dear Friends,
This summer, my oldest son Adam and I are excited to take an opportunity together, to serve children in rural Alaska at Tanalian Bible Camp (http://www.tanalianbiblecamp.org ). Tanalian Bible Camp is a non-denominational camp in Port Alsworth, Alaska; located about 150 miles by air from Anchorage. The purpose of the camp is to assist Christian churches in the rural villages of Alaska, providing a one week summer camp experience for children from those villages.
Life in Rural Alaska is very hard. Let me give you a small picture of what these children have to deal with:
· Alaska has the highest suicide rate per capita in the US
· Alaska’s rate of suicide is double the national rate
· Alaska’s native population has a suicide rate that is more than triple the national rate
· Alaskan Native men between 15-24 have the highest rate of suicide of any demographic in the US
· The Domestic Violence Rate is 10 times the national average
· Alaskan Native Teens have a birthrate 2 ½ times the national average
· Alcohol and Drug dependency in rural Alaska, especially among Natives is a huge problem, accounting for most of the crimes committed
As you can see, there is a great need for these kids to hear the gospel, and to experience Christian fellowship and discipleship. For many, it will be the only week of the year where they are in a truly safe environment, free from the threat of violence and abuse.
We will be travelling with some other members of our church – Redemption Church in Gilbert, Arizona. (http://gilbert.redemptionaz.com ) The church is helping us with logistics of our travel, and coordination of our stay in Alaska, however they are not providing financial support to us as volunteers. We are responsible for the costs of the trip. We will be serving at the camp from July 13th – July 20th, and the cost of the trip is approximately $1300 each. We are asking for supporters, both through prayer and financially. There are many ways you can support our work financially:
You can donate any amount directly to us securely at our GoFundMe page: www.gofundme.com/mikfe0
Any donations we receive beyond our needs for this trip will be donated directly to the Tanalian Bible Camp, for them to use in the general funding of the camp, as well as to provide scholarships and support to future campers.
Thank you for your support, we look forward to seeing what God has in store for us and the kids in Alaska!
Thank you,
David and Adam Brannon
